Does the European/PAL Xbox (and PAL Xbox games) support progressive scan?
atm , european/pal xboxes do not support progressive scan, but i have heard a rumour that they will/can with a hack.
i think somone tried a pal game on a chipped us xbox and managed to get ps, but it didn't output ps via a pal chipped xbox.
But PAL Xbox games support 16:9. right? I know it depends on the game, but NTSC games that support 16:9, the PAL versions will also support 16:9?
a chipped PAL Xbox will do progressive if you use a video mode disc to change the machine to NTSC. The video mode disc is freeware to download and takes about 30 secs to set. It basically sets the machines to US and then you get PS..very nice touch..
But then the Xbox will only do progressive scan on NTSC games only, right? Or will it do progressive scan on PAL games too?
progressive on PAL aswell. The Xbox determines the output not the games. This is great news for PAL gamers, if they have the gear of course..
So, does this mean there is now no reason to buy a US Xbox (unless you can get it cheaper)?
If you are only concerned with prog scan then yes... But I would also look at the state of PAL conversions. I'm told that all european Xbox games won't suffer from borders and slower gameplay but I don't know that for a fact. I know that Halo has optimised 50Hz code, but most if not all gamers that care would go for the US counterpart. Its that assurance that you won't have slower gameplay and huge borders. Just look at Final Fantasy X on the PS2 to see how european gamers are royally screwed.
Thanks for the replies.
But I thought a chipped UK Xbox (using the CD mentioned) would play US/60hz games (in progressive scan/HDTV modes where available)
If so I really can't see what benefit is gained from a US Xbox now.
Or have I misunderstood the chip/CD situation?
If my assumption is correct, and a chipped UK Xbox will run all games with all TV modes that the games make available, can anyone suggest a good place to buy a pre-chipped UK Xbox?
Yeah if you chip the Xbox and use the video boot disk then you can have the display in prog scan. Trouble is its a lot of hassle if you intend to use the feature for every game all the time. As for a pre-chipped console, I don't know too many places other tha lik-sang once again but shipping for the console will cost a bit. IMO its easier just buying a UK Xbox and chipping it yourself. The solder points are much larger and easier than on the PS2.
Anyone tell me where I can get this video CD. Thanks.
BTW, I chip XBox consoles for £20 plus the chip. You can either send me your console or I will buy and supply complete. PM me if interested.
By the way, in Japan do they have 110V or 220V outlets? Secondly, Japan's system is NTSC, right? Or is it PAL?
I believe its 110V DC and Japan is indeed NTSC, along with the USA. Europe excluding France is PAL (since France have decided to be awkward , so they use SECAM).
If you have a plasma or projector, and would like to change resolution, ONLY US Xbox supports it - and that's also only if the game supports it as well.
The mode CD everyone talks about, simply allows you to force either NTSC or PAL out of the Xbox. On a US Xbox it will also allow you to select 50Hz or 60Hz PAL, and doesn't give Prog Scan or any HDTV capabilities on a PAL box.
This is my finding anyway on my Xbox.
I also understand that there is problems with Prog Scan and Macrovision, which is why it's not supported - anyone care to expand please do.
