Hi

i have bought a new Philips Upscaling DVD player with HDMI socket (Philips DVP5960)

it does not have optical output and only has Digital coaxial output, i am buying the logitech Z-5500 5.1 speakers which has Digital coaxial input and a decoder which also supports DTS 96/24

will i be able to watch movies in true 5.1 and not dual/reverse/2x stereo

if so then were can i find this wire cheap and everywere i look it is expensive

thanks

Yes. digital coax does carry a 5.1 signal

for your system I wouldn't spend any money on an expensive cable anything with a phono connector on each end will do (I and many other people would argue that a bent coathanger will suffice for any system as it's a digital signal it either works or it doesn't)

Yes Digital Coaxial will give you 5.1 sound just like an Optical Toslink interconnect will. Most would go far as to say Coaxial is better than Optical.

Try the forums power buy section as a starting point, all quality cables there and very reasonably priced.

thanks for da replies

would 5.1 work if i used one of those red, white and yellow cables (i think its called phono or RCA) as the connector at the end of the cable looks the same as the digital coax cable, like this one http://www.taiwanconnector.com/RCA 3m pic.jpg
(if i use this wire 2 out of the 3 wires will be left hanging)

will using the wire above give true 5.1

will using a digital coax give better sound quality than the one above

Basically any wire with a RCA plug on the end will work, as far as quality is concerned I would not get too hung up with that, it is a digital system link not analogue. If quality is becoming your issue then DO look at other systems that are designed for home cinema.

I do not know how much you are going to spend on a 5.1 PC speaker system why not look at something like this which will have more inputs than you can shake a stick at. http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/content/products/details/index~modelcode~YAM-AV59PACK.htm Digital co-ax does send 5.1 and is identical to fibre but uses a copper cable instead.

I'll second Andy's suggestion, about a year or so ago bought the equivalent Yamaha package to this one paid about £200 delivered for the amp and speakers and have not been disapponted. As Andy says this will have more than enough connections, power, and surround modes (inc Dolby Digital, DTS), so is great value. Notice this one also has component video connections as well which is a bonus.

so a normal RCA and a digital coax wont have any difference in audio quality and both offer 5.1?

The thing here RICKYG512 is we are not talking audiophile stuff here, a PC speaker system will not benefit from using high grade cables, but looking at the Logitech site it states "A digital coax or a digital optical cable must be used to connect the DVD player to the Logitech speaker system. The digital coax cable must be 75ohm." If this is true then you need one of these http://www.tvcables.co.uk/cgi-bin/tvcables/PH400.html
