Usually electronics devices are only expensive the first years, but when they begin to sell a lot of them the prices are reduced.
That it is becouse the materials are cheap (cupper, silicio, plastic...) and the costs of developing have been recovered.

So Why isn't it happening with plasma sets?

Considering they used to cost about £12,000 about 4 years ago i'd say they have come down in price.

Early days yet for plasma screens. And I believe they're not as easy to manufacture as one thinks. The amount of electronics that's inside one of these screens is very very impressive.

    All the best,

    Dr John Sim.

And they still have a HUGE failure rate. It's only a very low percentage of plasma screens that are made that can actually be sold and not just scrapped at the factory.

To stop poor people having one I think. Although I could be wrong.

By my recollection, when they first came out, a 21 inch colour TV (4x3 ratio, very curved faceplate and corners) used to cost around GBP400. At a time when the buying power of one GBP was well over ten times what it is, now.

Or, to put it another way, they cost a similar amount to a new small car.

It has taken thirty years for the prices of these things to 'fall' in real terms to the almost givaway levels they are now.

Put in that context, Plasmas (and LCDs for that matter) are a bargain. I'd go further to say that, if I were a gambling man, I'd put my money on them probably halving in price (again) in the next 18-24 months.
