the wife/partner of a Samurai decided to fool her unfaithful partner into thinking he is making love to his lover by wearing the same mask his lover normally wears so he is none the wiser......Nasty scene somewhere later when she cant get the mask off and has to rip and hammer it off....

Any ideas of the name of this film? I thought it began with K or maybe Y? lol

Yes "Onibaba" - an absolute belter!

Great creepy Japanese stuff, with atmosphere by the bucketful!

Available as a Criterion Collection disc.

The Criterion is cropped accordingly to DVDBeaver but still a great disc. There's also a R2 version coming (August) in the Masters of Cinema series.

You can see the comparison of the two versions here.

The cropping is so minimal as to be virtually unoticeable. But for English speaking viewers the consideration is that the Criterion is the only one of the two with English subtitles in the extras, as well as having an improved translation for the subtitles of the movie.

Agreed. I didn't even realise the picture was cropped and am more than happy with my Criterion. However, Eureka is apparently doing good things with their releases, eg Pitfall and Face of Another, both reviewed at DVDBeaver, such that their new release of Onibaba may well be the definitive edition, and possibly waiting for.
