Does adding Power Amps really make that much difference?

I currently have an integrated amp (Arcam A65+) with Mission M51 speakers and Marantz CD6000KI. I'm thinking of buying a matching Arcam P75 power amp, but does adding power amps really make that much difference? Will the improvements in sound quality really justify the £280 this will cost me considering the rest of my system? What exactly will changed sonically, more bass, better soundstaging, louder etc? I would like to get one but £280 is a lot of money to me, would I be better off spending the money elsewhere, like a proper HIFI rack, better quality speaker cable? Cheers!

    Yes!

Less strain on each amp, therefore less distortion. It won't be louder, but at higher volumes the amp will be under less strain (less to do) than normal powering.

Better soundstage, more 3D and other audiophile techno- babble.

I upgraded from a single integrated amp to biamped setup and it's well worth it.

Going back to normal powering just seems to lack something.

    Sunday Ironfoot.

Care should be taken on anyones advice given on this particularsubject (mine most of all most likely!)
Bi-amping will give improvements but not not in the realms of Pro-logic to DD for instance.
As your Missions do not represent an overly tricky load you may well be forgiven for NOT noticing any differences on initial comparisons. Certainly at volume you would expect tonality to remain constant rather than the usual hardening up or recessing due to the more "horse power" present.
You might also notice a "tightening up" of bass response (music would be the most obvious trials) on the speakers you have bi-amped
You may well feel that the 280 would be better spent elsewhere.
It is also accepted that buying/using a better amp is preferable to bi-amping.
    Some food for thought.

    Steve.

    Hi Sunday

Depending on it's rrp I would consider replacing the 65+ with the new A80 due out next month.

A used A85 or equivalent (Cyrus/Tag/Rotel etc) is also an option.

Have a look on www.ex-dem.co.uk for ideas.

I think this would give a bigger improvement than adding a power amp to the 65+ or changing cables etc.

Would you say an Arcam A85 would sound better than using an Arcam A65 + P75 combo?

    Probably :)

I went from an AV50+8P to a A10 and the A10 sounded better. I briefly tried the AV50+10P and couldn't hear a difference between that and a A10 on its own. I think you're better off with a single, more powerful amp than two less powerful amps being used to bi-amp.

    Cheers,
    Liam

Sevenoaks have quite likely gotten rid of all their TAG stuff by now, and I'm pretty sure they never had anything as good as Bryston in there. :) You might get to hear some Rotel kit, though.

Hifi Corner Rose St. has Rotel as well, though no TAG or Bryston.

Actually, I don't think anyone in Edinburgh sells Bryston, though your best bet would probably be Loud & Clear (Stockbridge) as they sell PMC speakers (which has close ties to Bryston). Maybe try Glasgow? Much better selection of hifi shops, though I've been to a few and I can't remember seeing any Bryston kit anywhere...

LeighM , what speakers were you using?

Thanks for the input everybody, I've decided it probably isn't worth it for now, better off spending my money else where.
