Just bought a Panasonic 42PV500 plasma.

I now want to get a dvd player and am a little confused.

I have heard about dvd players which upscale the picture so that you get the best out of the display. Two models which I am looking at are the Samsung DVDHD850 and NeuNeo HVD2085.

But I am confused because I now hear that the Panasonic plasma upscales the image anyway.

Do I need a DVD which upscales the image or will any dvd player with component output be ok?

Any dvd player will do, the panel will upscale to its own resolution. Just get a good component output and enjoy.

The PV500 doesn't appear to have any form of film detection on board. I would recommend looking at a DVD player that has 2:2 and 2:3 detection and can output 480p/576p. This could be by component or HDMI. Either should offer an obvious improvement in image quality of a standard interlaced feed to this display

is it true for all panasonic boards or just the pv500?

what about pwd6? Does it have 2:2 and 2:3 detection?

    Thanks

    The commercial panels from D5 onwards(poss d4) have 2:3...not sure about 2:2

So are you saying that an upscaling dvd player like the Samsung DVDHD850 or NeuNeo HVD2085 isn't required for the PV500?

What exactly is all this 2:2 & 2:3 detection all about?

Sorry, I'd just got the hang of HDCP, HDMI, native resolution (I think) and 50Hz v 60Hz nd now we get 2:2 and 2:3 detection.

Can someone explain the issue (generally & simply) before my brain melts in this heat. [IMG]

I'd just started trying to understand this as soon as I read Gordon's post. It sounds like an NTSC issue, but my brain is fried too. I did a search on here and found nothing obviously helpful. help!

Tastymango and others with the Panasonic TH 42pv500, did you buy an upscaling DVD player? I have the same issue and am not sure what to do.

    Cheers!
