In days gone by it was quite common to give dustmen (and yes that is what they were called) and the like a few bob in the lead up to Christmas. I myself bung my postman Tommy a fiver as he is one of life's genuine guys and goes that extra mile to provide a great customer service.
As for the dustmen or environmental collection operatives or whatever they are called these days they get zilch as the following meme admirably shows why.

So do you give to a small token of thanks for a service that has been generally superb over the year?

Isn’t that more of a gift though?

As for tipping last time I looked the UK has a minimum wage
There is no reason to tip anyone for anything

I not getting into semantics so call whatever you like. But as using the minimum wage as a reason for not tipping is an odd one given that so many people who are paid the minimum wage still need to claim in work benefits just to survive.

But my thread is about bunging a few quid to someone who has given a service over and above what would reasonably be expected and I certainly get that from my postie .

Refuse collectors insist that we wheel our bins down the street to a collection place - so I make their job easier - never see them - no tip

Don’t have a regular postie - so no tip.

    Cheers,

    Nigel

Postman gets a card and a box of chocolates. As do the neighbours either side and 3 opposite next door get a bottle of wine .

No idea who the dustmen are .

Also nursery teachers are given £20 from each parent and taken out for dinner too but the bill Is shared by all the parents who attend the dinner .

I gave my son's teacher some bubbly and the Head some ale. And put into a collection for the support staff. They're all brilliant and work their socks off.

Cleaner, postie, window cleaner. Postie (Keith) is a top chap. He brings anything that won’t fit through letterbox round to the back door and wraps them in a mail sack for weather protection.

    A tub / tin of chocolates to the following people;

    • Mechanic as he takes good care of my car
    • Veterinary surgery as all the staff there are lovely and with three cats, we're regular visitors
    • Security at work as they take a lot of packages in for me every week, both work related and personal, including large items like car tyres and 19" alloys!
    • After School Club as again all the staff are lovely and do a demanding job

My mechanic also gets a selection of beers and his dog gets some type of bone.

I also make a donation of cat food to the local shelter via the Veterinary surgery.

I give tips through the year. Gas service, sweep, hair dresser, most services I give a tip too.
Tips however can go down badly as well. Ive had one customer who’s very wealthy give me a fiver for Xmas and that went down really well! Ive also handed back tips where I know the customer really can’t afford to give me one and a simple thanks is all I need.
Best tips so far was £500 which was a lovely surprise from a customer and my boat mooring fees are gifted each year and that’s the best part of £1400.

My postie, and not just because I’m one! He’s a good guy who does a good job.

And I’ve got the mechanic who looks after my cars a bottle of whisky. He’s a 100% honest, fair and skilled guy who saves me a fortune on dealership prices and does a better job to boot.

Tips show a kind response, you don't have to tip if you don't want to. There's no need to think of excuses why to give or not to give a tip, you either do or don't and that's it.

I tipped my window cleaner, postman and the DPD local driver £10 each. The driver I wouldn't normally, but he delivers stuff around once a month and helped me a few times with getting a SVS SB16 into the house without a moan or grumble. Top bloke!

Yeah - two "Wrongs" make a "Right" eh ? - I guess that your Wife is under strict instructions to refuse any tips that might ever be offered then ?

Dread to think about Xmas day around the McScrooges like yourself.....

Personally I used to tip the Binmen - long time ago now - but as those comedy piccies above show that's a thing of the past - I always tip throughout the year for good service in a retail environment - restaurants mainly but I've also returned with small gifts a few times to shops where they have gone above and beyond and it always surprises me how surprised the staff involved seem to be and always really really grateful :(

Of course our regular Barbers/Hairdressers always get a tip and a little extra at Xmas.

Regularly buy bar staff who server me well and pleasantly a drink and pop into my "regular haunts" before Xmas and leave some money behind the bar for the staff to have a drink on me.

We have a local "Lollipop Man" who does a really great job for kids and parent near our house who's been there every day since we moved in over 20 years ago - he's always smiling and says hello and stops you to chat - even though our "kids" are long past needing his assistance we still give him a card and a prezzie as do loads of the other Parents and neighbours.

We used to ( years gone ) give a Christmas tip to the postie and milkman, or my parents did . I myself used to get Christmas tips on my paper round . We used to give a Christmas tip recently our the postie ( John ) as he was our regular postie . So regular in fact that he knew I'd applied for a shot gun licence and we go out shooting . Don't even do that now as we have a different postie by the day .

I tip the bar staff every time I get the beers in the local.
Every one of the staff know what the wife drinks and it’s out the fridge as we walk in!
I drink the different cask ales so they never start mine. Just get the barrel glass ready!
That’s a proper local and proper bar staff imo. Worth the tip everyday.

Posties etc, I rarely see. If I did I would.

The Milkman gets a tip, even though we only get Milk twice a week. If I had my way we would get the Milk from the Supermarket and save a lot of money. :)
