I wonder if you think that some of the later Onkyo receivers, with folded front panels are ugly? I got used on receivers design with flat front panels, in brushed aluminium. They fold more and more, i.e. TX-SR603 was less folded, TX-SR604 some more and TX-SR605 is pretty much. After I saw the latest Onkyo DVD-HD device and how ugly it is, I was so irritated by design, beacuse I like Onkyo sound, so that I decied to ask if you think the same. I got old Onkyo TX-SV454 and I remember some higer end series, like TX-DS545 and they use one of the best designs I saw, useing flat front panels. There is less and less receivers today with such classic design, i.e. Sony 910, but still not as nice as they were before.

If I ever get to see my 905 I'll let you know :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Seriously, I do wonder about all the comments on how ugly these products are, and to be honest it doesn't/wouldn't worry me in the slightest how bad they are, function is far more important than form to me.

All these big brutes are a bit ugly!

How they perform is the important factor.

I would prefere if they would be makeing some models in classic design, with flat front panels, like Sony STR-DG910, or Harman-Kardon, designed like they used to be before. As avangard design is probably for more specific preferences, I would like they make a few models in classic design.
I also liked LED diodes on the buttons or above them, on the older models, Volume control with lower and upper limitator, with better dynamic in selecting power then todays mostly used digital volume selectors, with no end on the sides.
Also champagne colour, as it was usual before, looked more pretty to me then pure silber. However, all this was probably changed to reduce costs and to make the new design, sometimes just to be new, no matter if it is better or not. I would be ready to pay some more for the model looking more classic, not retro, but just classic. I.e. one of the better designs today I noticed is a Sony combination of a receiver STR-DB798 and a DVD model DVP-NS92V. They match very nice and what I like is that displayes are made with the same width and position, compared to Onkyo, where receiver displays, after series 502 and 602, are no more matched with DVD displays in either width or position. Unfortunately, I just do not like the Sony sound.
It is thru that some todays models are made to look rather retro, i.e. Sony STR-DA1200 reminds on devices from the 60s and Panasonic usualy looks specific for the brand.
My favourite design is from the end of 80s, but this is no more restored as retro, maybe for some 20 years, like 60s are a base for retro design today.

I will shortly be considering Onkyo receivers, and don't call me ugly.

I think they look pretty good. I will be going for a black one as this will fit in with my gear better.

I agree with that function is more important than looks, but actually I think the Onkyos look great, their rugged looks go with the solid build quality.

You could aways put a paper bag over the amp like my ex-g/f's mother.

My $ky box isn't much better looking, it was silver but I air-sprayed it black and painted the buttons in gold. Did the same to my sub-woofer and door-bell.

I don't like all these curves especially the hd-$ky boxes, av gear should be rectangler with no curves. (ex g/f's mother again) I have a Marantz CD5400 - that is how av gear should look.

Decent dot matrix displays and not cheap and tacky looking 7 segment displays.

Some design changes would not make any cost difference, like flat front panel. The front panel on the mew models, like TX-SR505, TX-SR605, with bend, just reminds on the fish mouth!

Ive seen worse. My 508 has kind of grown on me looks wise. It may be that I am so pleased with the performance I have learned to look beyond the appearance! Beauty is only skin deep after all!

i love it tbh. it looks like it means business and it does just that. i loved the looks of my old yamaha rx-v630, before they started screwing with the range's looks:

so tbh, the onkyo's are a perfect looking upgrade:

they look mean as ****. call it ugly if you like, but i love it.

Other than some of the older Harmon Kardon amps (with gold buttons) and maybe some Arcams, ALL av receivers are ugly but who looks at them when the lights are off and you're watching a movie?

I've got a Kawasaki ZZR1400 which some people consider to be an "ugly" motorbike.
I think it is bloody gorgeous and the looks were one of the reasons I bought it.
If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring old world.
And we'd all be married to right old munters

I'm not too fond of the silver versions (they're a little too retro) but the black models look good. Not stunning but they are better than many other amps

The good, the bad and the ugly! Do you consider TX-SR505E, TX-SR605 and some others frot panel looks like fish mouth? It sounds nice for the fish mouth! I consider they should make some models with classic flat front pannels.

i`m yet to see an amp that is gorgeous to be honest.the nicest looking amp i ever saw was a harmon kardon one i saw ages ago. but (like someone else said) its about the audio not the visual.i like the onkyo`s in black to be honest, the only thing i dont like (and this goes for the majority of amp makers) is all the bloody stickers all over it "HDMI,HD DVD AUDIO,SIRIUS,DTS etc etc.totally unnecessary imho.i just want a solid black amp with a nice display :D

The most of them is today ugly, but one of the better and classical looking pieces today is a combination of a Sony STR-DB798 and a DVD model DVP-NS92V. The later replacement STR-DA1200 is already bended like the others. But there is nothing folded like Onkyo. I wonder of what has inspired them to such a shape.
