Do the 6th generation XDE Pioneer plasmas buzz like Panasonics? How loud is the fan in the media box?

By no means all Panasonics buzz, probably the same proportion of XDEs buzz as PV500s. The media box fan likewise, I think that depends on ambient temperature to an extent. Any particular eason why just these 2 on your list, do you need a telly? If you have sky+, no need for it.

The PHD8 is the panasonic I have on my list along with the XDE. Reason being I don't want a noisy screen and there have been reports of panasonics buzzing.

PHds buzz much more rarely than the PV500, 99% of buzzing is the PV, no idea why. I'm on my 3rd PHD now, had 6, 7 and now 8, no buzzing yet. Well like everyone else, if I pressmy ear to it, sure I can hear it. We have kids, so normal listening levels are low in the evenings. We'd notice if any of them had buzzed.

I was in Comet the other day trialling the 436 and I could hear it buzzing from the rear right hand side as you look at it.

This really disappointed me it must be said.

No idea what it would sound like from the listening position under ambient conditions in the house.

Got to say, I've had 1 or 2 bad experiences with buzzing Pioneers, so I'm beginning to think "its just me!!".

If you can here it in the showroom it would sound an awful lot worse at home.

I have had a PW6, 435XDE, 42XM3, PHD6 and now a PHD8 and the only one I heard anything from was the Pioneer, but it was not the transformer it sounded like it was the screen itself, but that was from 2ft away and only with a really bright scene, not a problem at all.

I can hear the transformer on the PHD8 when I put my ear towards the back of it, but not even from 2ft in front of the screen.

i think all plasmas buzz to an extent, some are certainly worse than others, i dont think the buzz is just restricted to the p500 thats for sure. Mine you cant hear unless you turn the volume all the way down and have your ear right at the back of the screen. I dont think in most cases that this is not an issue to be honest

No, but if I don't like a screen I swap for something I do like and just cry myself to sleep thinking of the money I lost! :(

To put things in perspective though not all pv500s have an annoying hum...my 42pv500 makes a slight buzz that can only be heard when standing right next to the tv...it cannot be heard at all when sitting down about 3m away even if there is no sound on

My multiple screens are simply explained by the 'retailer' tag. I'm actually a CEDIA custom installer, and I bravely have one myself in the interests of research :lesson: Of course I have to have the latest model :D

I have had my PV500 a while now andf never been bothered by any buzzing...once you get it out of Dynamic it is much quieter than in the retailers.

    Sorry, I love it. :(

It will be up for sale as soon as the 1920x1080p panel arrives from Panny or Pioneer though.

I reckon you will be able to bag a load of 50PHD8 screens for about £2k next spring, even Gussie has to be happy with that! :)

it seems like a lot of the buzzing is dependent on the person who is listening considering the conflicting reports....So the key is to listen yourself....
