Do PAYG phones make you buy a top up every month?

I'm sure this used to be case.

I have a contract with T-Mobile but use the phone very little and would rather ben on PAYG and £10 would last me months.

No minimum topup required unless you want the bundles which usually have to be topped up every month to keep them active. Only usual restrictions are an outgoing call or text every 180 days to keep the SIM active.
