Pioneer 507XD from 2007

looking to get a Bose soundbar.

got a virgin box and firestick and planning on connecting the soundbar straight to the tv with optical toslink. And the virgin box and firestick will go to to the tv with hdmi

would That work or do old TVs not transmit sound via hdmi ?

The TV will receive the sound from the virgin box and firestick and output it over it's own speakers.

It probably isn't capable of transmissing that received sound out of a S/PDIF output though.

I **think** it can only output it's internal tuner via optical.
The OP would have been better posting this in the Plasma TV forum.

Yeah think your right
Long time ago when HD first came out we’d connect the laptop via hdmi to the tv and we would only get video ( we do have a Sony av receiver )

So as far as the virgin box goes we just connect it straight to the Bose sound bar via optical.

that leaves the firestick

That's more likely to have been a limitation with the laptop.

HDMI has had the ability to transmit audio alongside video from the start and TVs have generally always implemented that, but early computer HDMI ports often omitted the audio support.

It's the options for what to do with the audio when it reaches the TV that have broadened over the years.
