Do I really need a sub-woofer?

I have recently upgraded my amp to a Yamaha DSP-AX750SE so I'm reviewing my set up. I am using KEF Q35s for the front speakers which have a pretty meaty bass anyway, so up to now I've lived quite happily (ignorantly?) without a sub-woofer.

I have a few newbie questions to help me make a decision:

    1. Will a sub make a big difference?
    2. Would the the BK XLS200 be a reasonable choice in this system?
    3. What is the real difference between forward and downward drive?

I would only be looking to attach the sub at line-level and hide it a few meters away from the amp and tv (and the wife!) down the end of the sofa. I live in an upstairs converted flat so I do not want a lot of noise escaping downstairs. I would probably only use the sub for movies.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Zippy
A sub such as the Bk XLS200 would make a good difference to the lows in your system, setting the speakers to small and letting the sub produce the lows(below 80hz ) will free up your kef q35s which should give a smoother more powerful sound without bass boom.
    Cheers Gonzo.

There is no difference in sound quality between a downward firer or front firer. A subwoofer will make a big difference to the whole movie experience but bass does transmit through walls and floors seemingly easier than higher frequencies and the improvement to your movie experience could well be at the expense of your neighbour's hopes of a peaceful life.

Its not what most folk on a tight budget want to hear, but a subwoofer that makes a worthwhile addition to your set up is going to cost alot.

Most low cost subwoofers are simply not worth it.... even with budget speakers. But a good subwoofer will knock your socks off and you'll wonder how you ever coped without one.

    HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!

 oops sorry, got a bit passionate there...seriously though, you wont regret buying the XLS200, I got a DF version and after some tweaking have got it well integrated into my setup. And yes it does make a HUGE difference.

Thanks for the info: I make it 1 no, 3 yeses, and 3 maybes.

Actually I got the speaker model wrong. I've got the KEF Q55s.2 which are essentially Q35s with an additional ported bass driver with passive crossover in a floor standing unit. Oodles of extra bass weight compared to the Q35s.

I'll experiment with my Creative PC sub to get a feel for the extra bass depth, and then probably buy one anyway. If the neighbours complain, I'll move!
