Do I need to spend £700 on a new dvd player or is £250 enough?

I am looking for a new dvd player for my plasma screen. It is an Alis display which (according to other threads) is best on an interlaced component feed.

Is the picture from a £700 player such as an Arcam DV78 going to give me a noticeably better picture than £100 - £300 players such as the Yamaha DVDS540 or Sony DVPNS930? Is the improvement enough to warrant the investment?

The HK25 seems to be a popular choice but it only uses 24MHz video DAC's for interlaced rather than the 54MHz DAC's it uses for PS. Three DVD recorders also have component out (DVD recording would be useful). The Sony RDRGX3/7, the JVC DRM-1 and the Toshiba DR-1. would they be a good midrange compromise with added functionality?

Finding the best piece of kit without spending unnecessarily is very difficult.

    Any ideas?

I am in the same boat wondering about the quality from various makes from £200 upwards. Sony, Pioneer, Dennon, etc. From reading this and a couple of other forums it seems that new connections such as HDMI are going to make a diffrence and the "new" reference player from an American "expert" is $199.00.
I think I will hold off on the big money and just settle with a Pioneer 565 for £200 today and look again later this year or early next. Sorry if its no help to you though.

Contar's view seems to concur with the majority of plasma owners looking to buy an interim DVD player until HDMI becomes more common place...

Certainly if you are not interested in HDMI, then an Arcam player would give great performance, although 'how much better' it is over a mid-range player like the 930v is something I cannot comment on...

I know that there is a lot of talk about DVI-HDMI but it is not a concern as I will not be changing my display for some years. I would not pay £5K for an DVI-HDMI TV (at 42" too big) anyway but it is interesting that the link between the multimedia box and the panel of my TV is by handled Silicon Image DVI chips. Bear in mind that a cheap DVI-HDMI player does not guarantee a quality picture.

I am, as you are unsure about justifying the extra cost.

One addition thought, which may not be relevant, do you intend to play CD's on the DVD player.
I purchased a good DVD player to replace CD player and DVD player in one, with excellent CD playback.

No intention to play CD's - DVD playback only.

Prof i see you have a 444K (so do I)as for playback from a DVD-recorder most people find a dedicated player to be of higher PQ an ALis screen should display RGB almost as well as component ESP at 32" best bet is see if your local specialist will let you demo at home to compare a DVD EG DVD25/marantz DV4300/Denon 2800 etc with a recorder against your current player, then see if you can "see" the difference!
