Do I need a sound card?

Despite all my home stereo hi-fi knowledge and experience, I've never bridged the gap between my PC and my home stereo. I've got loads of music on my PC in SonicStage. I know that I can simply hook up my PC to the stereo using a minijack-to-RCA cable, but is this going to get me the best sound? Or will a sound card improve the sound quality? I've read some postings that seem to imply that a sound card would be redundant in this case. I'm confused by all the sound card info out there, so any help or advice would be greatly appreciated...
:lease:

Apart from sparing the processor, will a sound card actually improve the quality of the signal that is sent to my amp?

Thanks for the help...I've got my eye on this one:

i dont know how much money you've got to part with but seems like big overkill to me, one of those on ebay is going for £100, which seems way over and above the job it needs to do.

^That does the job and should do it very well, although it is external, up to you obviously but the difference in price is huge compared to the difference i would imagine from the two cards, which wouldn't be noticeable imo if there was a difference in the first place.

Thanks Abu, that price difference is enough to make me go for the cheaper external one. I'll give it a shot and let you know how it goes...
