At this moment I have a Sony STR-DB925 receiver which is now a few years old. I have it linked up and use it mostly with my Pioneer plasma and HDMI dvd player. Has technology changed that much, and without breaking the bank, do I need to upgrade, and if so, to what?? Techies please help with your advice.

Do you feel you are missing anything? Do you use 6.1 or just 5.1? The only things that have changed are (correct me if im wrong please) the addition of :DD: pro logic 2x and the advent of THX select 2.

There are the newer amps with auto setup but that can easily be done with a tape measure and an SPL meter. The Yamaha one is good but still needs to be checked with a spl and tape measure afterwards to make sure. Obviously there are newer and faster DAC's and the newer amps usually have 7 speaker capability and more power with the more expensive one being able to use the 2 rear cahnnels to bi-amp the fronts in a 5.1 setup. The new one is DVI switching, still pretty rare and expensive.

If your still interested in upgrading how much would your budget be?

I use 5.1 but wondered if there was any outstanding changes that I was missing out on. Since I bought my receiver I have upgraded my tv, dvd player and speakers but unsure whether I would see any difference to my surround sound setup with a new receiver. My budget would be no more than £400. I looked at the Pioneer VSX1014 for £369 but would I notice any difference??

IMHO you should notice an increase in accuracy and speed that the surround is produced and (without going into the difference in the sound style of one make to another) a better, clearer and open soundstage. Please bear in mind all this is subjective, your ears and mine are very different etc.

Can you biwire your front speakers? If you can getting a 1014 and biamping the fronts (Look here ) can make quite a difference to the sound quality on music and films :D

Can you arrange a demo anywhere? Thats the only real way of knowing. :smashin:

The Pioneer 1014 made a night and day difference to my setup, the sound is brighter and more alive, the rear has really come to life.

It may be of course that ditching the Bose has helped but this amp really is well spec'd and capable for the money, I am well pleased with it.

The only gripe - can't get the sky digibox remote to program into the Pioneer remote.

would you believe I saw he had an ad on Ebay. Phoned him up, agreed a price-I could not wait for him to send it so decided to drive thru to Edinburgh on Saturday afternoon. Fantastic shop "James Morrow" specialising in quality products, so they now have a new happy customer.
