Do I need a 720p AVR Receiver?

I am a complete noob at this stuff so any help is appreciated here.

I am about to purchase an AVR receiver however I would like to know if it is worth going for one which is capable of outputting 720p? I was originally considering the purchase of a Denon 1906 however now I am wondering if I should go for the Yamaha 757 (or similar) which can output 720p and provide up conversion?

My new DVD player will output 720p and utilises component connections so could I connect this directly to a Denon 1906 and still benefit from 720p or would I have to connect directly to my TV which supports HD?

Many thanks
