Do DVD recorders make good players?

i take it that DVD recorders (STB) are also able to play back DVD video. Is the quality of video and audio comparable to average DVD video players? Do they have the features such as CDR/RW compatibility and MP3? Are they region coded? In other words could DVD recordable be a good substitute for a DVD video player?

i have the panasonic dmr e30 and as a player its coparible with the sony s735 i had before but not as good as the denon 3800 i have now. But for an all in 1 its unbeatable .If it broke down now id buy another today.
