Do all amplifiers sound the same?

Passive crossovers don't stop you having a good frequency response - Revel and Kef have been doing it for years. However, I think they really mess up the transient response, and muddy up real music (as opposed to sine waves). Although they have other disadvantages, when I want high fidelity, I use my electrostatics.

I love reading the technical reports in Stereophile speaker reviews, which include step responses. Passive crossover speakers make a real mess of that, but the better active speakers, while still imperfect, actually make a decent stab at recreating a band-limited step function.

Getting the frequency response right only gets you so far. It's only part of the job.
