    Hi Razor, great idea.

Just to let you know I'm typing this on my finally completed dedicated HTPC. The buiid was easy, getting the software bugs out wasn't. Even streaming WiFi video. I'll start a thread if anyone's interested.

mrmo would love to hear how you get on with the streaming WiFi video as i don't intend connecting my HTPC to the internet ( i don't want firewalls or virus checkers on it) and i don't want to have to take my floorboards up laying cables (far to many cables at the back of the RD50 now it's like spaghetti junction :rotfl:

OK. I will try to start with something useful.

I've got the Sagem HD-D45 and the biggest problem for me is the solarisation/banding on skintones when either the person or camera moves. At the moment, I'm using Freeview connected to TiVo set to Best quality recordings. But I've been playing with direct recordings of the MPEG stream via a Hauppauge DEC2000 box and PC.

If the recording remains within the "digital domain" i.e. not going through several D->A and A->D conversions with TiVo the resultant image suffers far less with the solarisation issue. So basically, the harder the scaler has to work on low quality images, the more pronounced the problem is.

Therefore, to get the best out of the Sagem, you really need to be using a HCPC or Microsoft Media Centre (or clones :)).

Nigel are u saying the freeview recordings with a PC digital TV tuner is better than the original broadcast or just better than TIVO recordings.

Have you tried the analougue route by pluging the ariel into the back of the Sagem directly.?

Had a look at the Tosh & Sagem45 about an hour ago in Comet's, east enders was on & while you could spot solarisation/banding on skintones you had to be looking for it,don't like the screen though. The Tosh was suffering very badly at times.

My tip for today best picture of the BBC & ITV channells is with freeview digital & you get the best picture with free..... using a good quality rooftop ariel

Better than the recordings on TiVo at Best quality. Tivo is connected via SCART so the signal goes DVB digital->Analogue SCART, Tivo Analogue SCART to digital (for TiVo recording) then digital->Analogue SCART to display on screen. Since the Sagem is then taking an already poor analogue signal from the SCART and scaling it up to 1280x720, it just magnifies the problem!

I think TiVo was originally designed to record 4:3 signals, so having an anamorphic feed with extra info (well non-square pixels anyway) means that it struggles.

When I first saw the Tosh a few months ago, I noticed really bad pixelating even on a DVD source.

I'm currently trying ShowShifter with my DEC2000, looks promising so far.

I find the recordings i make with my freeview PC digital TV card to be indistinguishable from the original broadcast.
Havent got around to trying showshifter yet, do you have to be connected to the internet or can you download the schedules at another computer.?

Of course but there is a lot of good information buried in the huge number of previous posts this is an attempt to keep new information more centralised
and some of it will probably end up in the sticky
Maybe another purpose is to stop a thread on eg the Sammy L7 being hijacked & taken over by a bunch of unruly schoolboys

You know when you go into Comets you can only really demo the sets with a DVD because of the poor TV signal . How about recording eastenders to a DVD & using that to check for how they handle a typical TV broadcast. You can then try the same programe on as many sets as you want .

I agree, the quality is indistinguishable, but then it should be. You're just recording the original MPEG stream. By letting ShowShifter handle the scaling, it puts less strain on the TV's scaler.

I've just configured it to use the schedules from XML TV. I already had this setup for Media Portal so it was easy to do.

I suppose the advantage of being connected is that updates are done automtically. Mine is using a cheap E-Buyer wirless card.
