Hello All,

After a few weeks of selling on my much beloved HTM-12's, I was in search for a new L C R build and narrowed my options to a couple of models. In the end I decided to go with the Elusive 1099's as my new L C R.

These are true beasts and whilst they are an extremely well designed three way speaker, they were the perfect width for my new in wall design. As some may know I had to sell on the HTM-12's not because I wasn't happy with them but because they were just too wide for what I had in mind with my new design.

Basically I am now building a new set of L C R with 18 inch subs in between each of the channels which will reside behind my acoustic transparent screen.

Below you will see some pictures of what I had to do to make the screen wall stronger in order to carry the weight of two huge subs and the new L C R when finished.

Quick rundown on what I have done so far. I cut all my MDF and prepared for the build. Monday I started gluing up the cabinets for the L C R and yesterday I was able to start and complete the build of all three crossovers. This actually took a lot longer than I had anticipated but the results were well worth it. I hope they will work and sound as good as they look

So, I will post some pics below for now and will try to keep on top of this thread as and when I improve in my build.

Here you will find some pictures of having to re enforce the screen wall:

Thank you my friend :) how are you getting on with the HTM 12's? I hope they are as good as, if not better than what you had hoped for

Love 'em mate! Still working on placement, got one side sitting on top of my PSA1510, which is perfect height, trouble is I need another PSA for the other side... :)

Wow mind blown! its funny how nearly all my family and friends consider what I have in way of cinema as to much!

Just realised I had some more pics of the subs and crossover build :)

Another great build mkohman. I've heard 'a' 1099 in action, albeit only as a centre speaker. The cinema max10's where used for L&R duties. I ended up going with the max10's with a dedicated room in mind (the 1099's are huge!'. And I guess at the time being my fist DIY speaker attempt I wanted to keep it simple too. Still, saying all this I'm with what I have (I don't loose sleep over it) :) .

So your 18" subs. What do you hope this will add to the mix. Your REW results for the 4 x 15's where pretty amazing.

Thank you for your kind words. The cinema max 10s are also very nice speakers but I don't think they make them as a kit anymore (I may be wrong).

Actually my other 4 subs are also 18s and not 15s.

In all honesty the four 18 inch subs I already have is more than enough for a normal person but I don't consider myself as being normal :rotfl:

Joke aside, I got the drivers for a good price and I've always wanted to build subs that will sit between my L C R. No real need for it but more of just a 'want to build', I guess. I'm sure it'll add some nice depth to the whole soundstage. You know what they say... You can never have too many subwoofers

Today was so horrible, it rained all day so I decided to stay in and crack on with the build :) I managed to cut the internal dividers (table saw inside the garage) for the speaker cabinets and for extra strength, I not only used gorilla wood glue but made 9 pocket holes per piece and used 38 mm screws. I also made 9mm holes for the cables to go through into the relative sections from the crossovers to the drivers.

Nice to see you have most definitely got the DIY bug!! These are always getting good write ups.

If memory serves you have some options to tweak the crossover to suit at the top end?

Morning @markymiles, yes they have been getting good reviews indeed and I'm very excited to hear them once completed. Yes there is a padding option on the crossover to which I will facilitate. Thanks to @Ringnut who gave me this idea, I will connect the HF padding from the xover to the back of the cabinet and attach to a second speaker terminal at the back.

This will give me the flexibility to apply the HF padding with connecting a wire between + and - to the terminal as and when I desire rather than taking out the drivers to access the crossover board and do it via the crossover. I am pretty sure I will probably never use this feature anyway as they will reside behind my AT screen and I will be applying my personal target curve but I guess its always good to have the option to do so if required :)

I've never heard them and these would have been my first choice as well, but they were just too too big. As you say, they are huge!

Bet this room will sound superb once you're done, with the new Trinnov in place...

completely jealous :)

good morning .. thank you for your kind words.. I am looking forward to hearing them in action once all completed

Two of the three speakers front baffled glued and clamped for approx 24 hrs each.. Now moving onto the third and final one before taking them out for sanding and round overs next week.

Good evening all.. So today was a nice day and I thought it'd be a good idea to get the sanding out the way and prepare the speakers for painting.

By the time I had finished for the day, I realised I had spent 6 hours in the garden o_O

When you sum it up , it works out to be 2 hours per speaker (not that bad really). So what did I do?

First off, I sanded all the speakers with 40, 60, 120, 240, 400 and 600 grit sandpaper. I took my time when doing so especially with the 40 and 60 grit as these are the most crucial part of sanding. If not careful you can easily take off too much of the MDF and even have waves in the surface or dips :nono:

So after sanding I moved onto rounding over all the speakers to give it a professional look and then moved onto the cut outs at the back (speak on connection is for actually connecting the speakers to the power amp and the speaker terminal connection above it will act as a jumper for using the High Frequency Padding) which is usually accessed on the crossover board , however bringing the cable from the crossover board to the back of the speakers which will be much easier to access if I ever needed to use this feature was a good tip given to me by @Ringnut . Thank you @Ringnut  although using the speaker terminal for the jumper lead was my idea :rotfl:

Anyway, enough talk.. Here are some pics:

Once again, your attention to detail is fantastic!

Not much progress but I managed to do the threaded inserts for the rubber feet and placed the speaker on deck to see how they would look 😊👍
