Ok so after much deliberation I thought I would test the water on my recently completed DIYSG Speaker builds. My room has completely changed since I ordered and I fancy trying something different shaped as I can now fit all three identical speakers in a vertical orientation. I'm also thinking about shallow wall mountable or baffle wall type speakers.

These sound absolutely amazing and I defy anyone to beat the performance for the price. They do need a decent sub as despite the size they need to crossover around 80hz minimum.

    They are these:

    Cinema-8 DIY Sound Group

Alchemy Center Channel DIY Sound Group

They are all designed by Jeff Bagby who is well known and a respected designer.

Size is 27" Tall, by 10" wide and 12" deep. They are pretty big, but big high efficiency speakers with an effortless sound are all the rage.

I also built the Towers as the Cinema 8's and Fusion 8 Towers are identical other than the shape and the kit came with the Tower Baffles.

Alchemy Tower Kit DIY Sound Group

So you can pick which suit your room better. The Towers are not veneered just painted Black. Both are included as they won't be any use to me.

Build thread is here, apologies it's a bit on the long side. I got the kits from post 219 if you want to skip the deliberating :):

DIYSG Fusion 8 Tower and Centre Build

My mate round the corner was impressed when he came to mine for a demo so I let him borrow them for a week. His review is here. He is a more discerning listener than me as well as better able to describe what he hears. I don't disagree with any of it. The only thing, in my room there were no issues at all integrating with my subs..

DIYSG Fusion 8 Tower and Centre Build

So basically you are getting everything done for you, no hassle importing, building etc etc and for less than the total cost of £1100 if you bought them yourself.

Few things to mention, whilst they look great there are a few things here and there. I took a tiny bit too much off when flush trimming the veneer in a couple of places. Also the Cinema 8's are baffles made by me rather than the Kit's ones as I got the Tower baffles. So you've got slot ports instead, which look nicer in my opinion. The boxes are stuffed with 19mm sheepswool felt and 25mm acoustic foam as well as a touch of polifill. Happy to paint them if veneer isn't your thing. You would have to pay first obviously. In fact I may paint them anyway as I think they will look better black on top of the wooden worktop, so you better be quick if you want the veneer.

Can't think of anything else, feel free to ask any questions. You are welcome to pop round for a demo. I won't be posting but willing to drive to meet up although I suspect you would like to hear them first.

Pics from the above thread. Just to be absolutely clear the last two are of the alternative Towers :)

Been looking at these kits for a while...

What exactly would I get for £750 your ad is a bit confusing?

Is it the black towers and a center or is it every speaker (excluding subs) that you've photographed?

Hi, you get the choice of which you prefer to use and can keep both types of L/R cabinets. There's one centre and then both sets of L/R speaker cabinets ie The Cinema 8's (veneered) or the Fusion Towers (painted black). They use the exact same speaker parts including crossover so it's up to you which box you put the drivers in.

Does that make sense, basically I have six drivers, 3 cd's and 3 crossovers. They are currently configured as 2 x Cinema 8's and one Fusion 8 Centre. If you wanted to have the towers instead then you would need to remove everything out of the Cinema 8's and put them in the towers.

You can have all the boxes as I won't need them so you can see which you prefer. :smashin:

Is the sound similar from the different towers?

The problem I have now is my tower speakers really lack in low end, I have a sub but there's a bit of a hole where the lower mids should be so was looking for something to fill that a bit, I'd be most likely to go for the fusion towers.

I did briefly try the Cinemas where I had the towers previously and I couldn't tell any difference. Maybe if I had both set up and able to flick between them I might, but they are very similar as you would expect. In terms of mid bass they do well but they aren't full range speakers. They need a sub but 80hz crossover is fine. I certainly don't notice any gaps in the bass.

Been looking at your ad a few times. It's just that I am not ready for about 11 months. New bungalow with dedicated room has only just started to have the groundwork started. Also thought about the JBL 3677 on here and fancied the Arendals too.

Room will be about 7.5m x 5.8 with an acoustic screen if you have any comments about suitability. Didn't I read that you had a problem with one of your drivers the other day though?

    Decisions, decisions

    Regards

    Graham

    Hi Graham,

I did have a problem with one CD, but I simply put it together incorrectly. They are all working perfectly now. I haven't heard either of the other speakers so can't really comment. Might be worth asking @Ringnut his thoughts as I believe he has heard all three and ended up with the DIYSG 893's after very nearly buying mine. Read into that what you will, I'm not going to make any claims about which is better although I have my suspicions [emoji1] Mine have more in common with the JBL's obviously : CD in Waveguide, Pro woofer, front ported, high sensitivity.

There's quite a price difference, you could only buy one of the others for the price of mine, but I imagine all would be capable to fill your new room and sound great.

    Cheers

I'll try and get some more opinions on my choices before deciding. Are there any independent reviews of your kits anywhere?

I don't believe so, you are restricted to owner's reviews, which could be biased obviously. Lots more on AVS have them than here, there's a whole section dedicated to DIYSG speakers in case you weren't aware:

DIY Sound Group - Loudspeakers and Subwoofers - AVS Forum | Home Theater Discussions And Reviews

How far away are you, obviously you're welcome to come round and hear them for yourself as is anyone else. There's literally no reason for me to change them other than the shape. I fancy a baffle wall so need shallower speakers. I can modfiy these which I will probably do if they don't sell. Just seems a shame to do that.

Thanks for the link. I did read right through the build thread to search for your comments just before you posted. Still interested mainly because the Arendals or JBL'S will cost a lot more.

I had a look to see if there were any dipole or tripole versions to match on the DIY site but couldn't see anything

    Regards

A lot people have gone for the volts with their wide dispersion they are an excellent surround speaker. Not as much dispersion as a bipole/dipole but pretty damn good all the same. I love mine.

Before anyone asks, they are staying :)

Is there a recommended kit for these surrounds? I want to weigh up the cost for your front three and four surrounds

The kits are here for the 6's

    Volt-6 LX DIY Sound Group

    Or here for the 8's

    Volt-8 LX DIY Sound Group

I went with the 8's as I just had a feeling the 8 was the better driver. I did mine in a smaller sealed box. I therefore have to run a 120hz crossover as without the port the bass is a bit limited. I reckon the ported 6 would be good too though and enough for most people.

Here's my build thread if you're interested :

Ok will call it a day. Following the loss of a parcel by Shipito I don't want to give them them any more parcels to lose. So dont really fancy doing another build from DIYSG. Will keep these for the forseeable. If anyone desperately wants them you know where I am and how much I want for them.

If I do a baffle wall in the future will modify these. Archiving......
