I built a 16:9 screen, and the overall size of the frame was 84ins x 47.25ins, which is the viewable size since it doesn't have any masking. There are some pics on my website if you're interested.

For a 16:9 screen which is the usual, then to work out the height the formula is Width in inches ie. 84" (7ft) divided by 16 muliplied by 9 this will give you the height in inches, in Gary's case 47.25".

8ft screen is 96" so height would be 54".

I built a 7ft screen the same as Gary, still have the border to apply but I'm waiting on UrbanT's efforts first before I commit

I have a viewable diy screen size of 80 inches wide and 45 inches high which gives 16:9. I also have a flock tape border which is 2inches each side and 1.5 inches at t he top and bottom.
See my screen goo story for the making of it.

I built my own screen last weekend and used the dimensions of 80" x 45". I too used gary's site as a guide and overall things went very smoothly (I hope to post some pics soon).

I covered the frame with a black velvet/suade type material and I'm very pleased with the results. A black border makes all the difference IMO.
