What diameter core are you considering? I'll have a proper look through my catalogues later on.

CPC will sell the grey sheathed 1.5mm^2 in 50m lengths for £31.60 (order code CBBR1098) and 100m for £61.56 (CBBR1099) or the transparent sheathed stuff at £76.44 for 50m (CB02987). Those prices don't include VAT and are from the 2004 catalogue so may be a little outdated now. :)

Proper plugs? anything in particular you're after? Should be pretty easy to find - Maplin, B&Q, etc.

Hi guys forgot this was still running, any way i have found 25m of SY 2.5mm 3 core numbered (not coloured) with a PVC bedding, wrapped in a galvanised steel braid & PVC Sheath for £38.25 inc vat & delivery.

I need about 8m so have approx 17m to divide up accordingly to cost & postage, its quite heavy cable.

well dividing it up it works out @ £1.53 per metre plus delivery, which i guess will be max £8.00 plus vat using interparcel, if The post office are any cheaper then will try them, but i guess due to weight anything over 5m would be best couriered

INGO, sorry I was late in reading your post, the SY you have bought is OK but 2.5mm one is better, usually £1.00 per metre if you buy 100 metres of it, as regards plugs for either end, Wattgates can be purchased from either russ andrews or from e-bay, just tap in wattgate on the search page, for the other end, IMHO you cannot beat the MK toughplug, £2.65 from B and Q (no one in the UK sells them cheaper) or you can be a bit posh and buy a silver plated one off e-bay again, this thread makes sense in that it gives other forum members a chance to get the cable without having to buy a full roll, only slight draw back is the stuff is heavy so postage costs are fairly high, plus you are better off sending it registered post cos the post office are, shall we say, not very reliable!!

Sounds like postage will be about as much as the cable then. Is it SY you've got? The start of the thread you were after CY (and so was I).

CY is far harder to obtain (with the braiding beeing viewable through the clear outer sleeve) there are other types of CY available but the one I mentioned has to be imported, I have spent 6 months researching where to buy this stuff at a reasonable price, did get a small piece off e-bay and made a cable up with a wattgate and a toughplug, tested it for 1 month next to the exact same cable but using SY instead, 1 was powering an Arcam DV88+ the other a Hitachi 42 inch plasma, after swapping them around a few times I personally preffered the SY as it improved the picture on the plasma (for comparison I used my Samsung DVD player with no special power lead) otherwise it may have been the power lead on the Arcam that was altering the picture, anyway without confusing myself and anybody reading this, SY was better in my system so I gave up trying to find any cheap CY after that. If I remember, it was a firm called ELAND cables that offered to import me some for £130.00 per 100metre coil

It is SY having done some research myself, SY is better than CY, the steel braiding is viewable through the clear pvc sheath & is according to common consent better thant the copper CY

    Ingo,

What is the diameter of the SY cable? Will it go into regular plugs?

I'll probably pass on this then, until I figure out what I want.

Was planning to use CY to make some of these
    http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/merlino.html

Does the braiding need to be viewable? Otherwise, it looks like CY is fairly easy to obtain, even by the metre from cpc.

Wasn't planning on using wattgates either due to the cost - the merlino is more of a budget job.

cooperg, the article is slightly mis-leading on the TNT website because the picture of the CY cable is with the see through outer sleeve, that is the type of cable I was referring to in my previous post, Simon O has not read my post either as the first few lines state that the CY with the see through sleeve is the hardest to obtain, just like the one on the TNT website, the other type of CY which SimonO has put on his post is NOT see through, so if you want to make a cable with see through cable of the braided variety then I suggest SY will work OK, as it happens, maybe the non-see through CY will also be OK, make one up and let us know mate, a decent IEC connector is the Schurter variety, £2.00 odd from farnell cpc providing you buy £35.00 of goods otherwise they charge you a handling fee
