I got to have a quick play with the new Canon Powershot A70 last weekend, felt nice, quite small, image resolution pretty good. You can get it for around £270.

Alternatively look at the S45 or G3 (I think!) again, both Canon.

Martin, depends how much you want to spend and what you want.

Canons A series are very good as are the S series or the more expensive but flexible G series.

If its point and shoot you want the A range would be good.

If size is an issue then the ixus range.

If creativity is important then the S range

If money is no object then the EOS D10 SLR:D

A good website for seeing exactly what you get with canons (including menu options) is http://web.canon.jp/Imaging/BeBit-e.html

Once you get your selected camera look on pricerunner for cheapest dealer then get jessops to price match if you want a local dealer

I've got a Canon S45 - excellent camera - it has point and press for SWMBO and full manual control if I fancy playing with it......
It's size is pretty good too.....
Take a look at this site for in-depth reviews......

In my opinion most of the known brands are good if you get at least a 2 megapixel with an optical zoom.
One thing you should check is what kind of battery comes with the camera, some digital cameras kill the batterys very fast,
I find Sony's infolithium battery is very good and gives a readout of remaining time.
