Question Distorted dark areas

Active Member

I am watching Netflix on my 4K TV, and I have noticed, on dark areas of film, there is a rough gradient effect. I have the Netflix setting set to high, and watching a new series so it should be Ultra HD. I have attached an image to show, any ideas what this is? I have very fast broadband speeds, so connection speed isn't an issue.

That's false contouring and is very common - even on 4k TVs, particularly those with 8 bit rather than 10 bit panels.

I would suggest you have the brightness turned up too far and it's making the effect worse. Find some calibration screens with the brightness boxes and turn down the brightness so the bottom 6 or 7 boxes are no longer visible. This will then mask the noise to a certain extent. Avoid vivid picture settings as these also make things look worse.
