Disney are launching a new 'disposable' DVD rental system in the US:

Perhaps this will solve the 'scratched DVD' problems many rental users have been having.

Disney are hoping it will reduce piracy although I would have thought a limited time disk might encourage people to pirate something just incase they wanted to keep it.

    But are these even DVDs?

I'd say they're discs with movies on them. I can't see Disney getting the permission to use the DVD trademark.

They are probably be a variant of DVD-Rs just with degradeable dye. So yes - they would be DVDs.

    That's not my point.

Disney has already been threatened with legal action over their use of 'Disney DVD'.

There's no such thing and I can't imagine the DVD® owners allowing them to use their VERY well known trademark.

Disney has a habit of assuming they have the right to do anything they want. That has been costly for them in the past.
