you need the hard drive to cache the 7 day epg, no hard drive then no epg.

Above poster must be right as it wouldnt come on when i disconencted the HDD

It did carry on working if I turned the HDD off after it had booted.

I will look into finding a quieter HDD as the difference when it is off is massive. i also saw a thread where someone sued an SD card type HDD which would be ideal.

You got into it OK then?
Those solid state drives are a bit pricey so I'd try using a standard one.

Yea I found athread which showed how to open the box, it was a case of

6 screws out from the underside
pop off the silver bits on the sides
couple more screws and off pops the top black bit
then 3 more screws on a metel lid under the outer black lid

HDD has a Sata cable, a fan cable and then one more pwoer cable.
