DirectX & OpenGL to open up low-level access

Surely this would kill Mantle before it even got started? I see that as a good thing as creating an entirely separate API is a waste of developers time and resources IMO, they don't do it for Macs so it makes no sense to do it only for AMD which already run the games.

    Thoughts?

I suppose we have Mantle to thank for this, though! Also, won't this be DirectX12 or something which will be years - and new cards/OSs - away?

It doesn't specifically say but given OpenGL are also incorporating it, MS can't hang around too long if they don't want to become obsolete as I'm sure Valve would love to see it's demise and will be pushing for OpenGL given it's cross-compatibility and their move to Linux.
