Having just bought a 128 meg Radeon 9500 (£109 from Novatech) and also having modded it via rivatuner (non mod speed via 3d mark 2000 - 9020, modded speed - 11,867) can now enjoy games at high resolutions with no discernable loss of speed - example, 'no-one lives forever 2', looks gorgeous with highly detailed, colourful graphics and some great sfx.
However, the main reason why I bought this card is because of the imminent release of Doom 3 which requires a meaty graphics card to show off its directx 9 graphics but I'm eager to see what directx 9 graphics look like NOW - are there any current games or demos that can showcase this protocol?

The current 3Dmark demo can "showcase" DX9 graphics. To be honest though 3D Mark '03 looks pretty awful on my GF 4 DX8 card and not because it's running slow. Download it and see if it looks good on your DX9 card.

P.S. Doom 3 is looking more like the end of the year now...

Stormchaser, I'm not sure if Doom 2 has done a 'duke nukem forever' stint - but I think that a june/july release was on the cards anyway - I just hope they don't put the release date back as I'm dying to check out those humungous graphics with my new setup!
Sweetmate, when I had my geoforce 2 Ti graphics card a month or so ago, I was happy with the score, given my setup at the time (2564) but when I bought my new radeon, the score shot up to 11,000+ and some of the demos and benchmark demos on 3d mark were unlocked - I was pretty much impressed with the dx9 demos but would love to see some more games/demos making the most of dx9 - the latest version of 3d mark 2003 apparently has tons more but the download is a whopping 171 megs!

gargoyle, i think you're talking about 3D mark 2001, a DirectX 8 benchmark, which has some lovely pixel shaders stuff but no DX9.

On the new 3D mark (03), the 1st game is a crappy looking flight sim, the second is a doom 3 clone which looks ok (but the textures and bump mapping are nowhere near the quality of Doom3), and the third is a terrible looking "game" which makes use of Pixel Shader 2.0 and maybe its cos my card is only DX8.1 but it looks absolutely awful. Plus the other stuff that will run on non-DX9 hardware isnt much to look at either.

So maybe it will look better on DX9 hardware like the Radeon 9500/9700.

I think its only the forth test in 3Dmarks2003 that uses DX9.0 the others use 8.1 and lower.

The ATI Monkey demo looks good but id rather watch the real world enviroments in 3Dmarks2003.

    I like the monkey :)

The DX9 screen saver isn't too bad either - certainly different.

    Available here .

With Direct X9, do you need to buy a new graphics card to use it?

I have a GF4 TI6000. Does this mean I will have to buy a new graphics card eventually for Direct X9 or can you simply download new drivers

    Thanks

No you don’t need a new card I’m running it fine at present on an Ge-Force3 card.

Ah, but you're not getting DX9 benefits :p

For the full effect you'll need a DX9 capable card - Radeon 9700 Pro for example. It's backward compatible will all cards though.

A driver upgrade won't do it - need new hardware :smashin:

The whole problem with DX upgrades is that the games come months or years after the hardware. We still only have a handful of games that actually use DX8 and 8.1 hardware features. And DX8 hardware came out almost 2 years ago!

We will not see any games with DX9 "benefits" for a long time so the only real use of new graphics hardware is higher framerates at higher resolutions for now.

    Hi Garrett.

    It's a question of symantics!

Yes, you can use DX9 without a new card, but can't utilise DX9.

It's obviously backwards compatible, but downloading/installing DX9 on a DX8 card is pointless.

Of course, it's a mute point for me with my watercooled 9700 Pro (425/750).

    3D Mark 2001se > 18k.
    3D Mark 2003 > 6k.

    :p :p :p
