DirecTV launches first of two HD satellites

    These satellites do MPEG4 HD. Unfortunately, it renders the HD Tivo useless, but they will manage to cram in a lot more channels this way.

    I noticed at last week's NAB show (Las Vegas) that Neotion were previewing a neat PCMCIA card that plugs into a CI CAM socket on an STB and transcodes from MPEG4 to MPEG2 ; what a neat idea (don't ditch your QualiTV boxes yet as it should enable them for MPEG4, certainly if you have a QS1080IRCI).

    It does sound neat - but - will it work with encrypted broadcasts? How would the box work with 2 active cards?

    Or am I missing something?
