I have just bought a sony str de597 amp;pioneer dv575 dvd and sony klvl32m1 lcd.
When I connect up I intend to use digital audio connections from my dv575 and existing sky+ box to the amp and take component and scart(rgb) directly to the TV.
Do I still need to make multi-channel connections from dv575 to amp ?
Also is the above scenario better than making the video connections to the amp and then to TV( I would still use component connection but would then need 2 cables--is there any advantage in this)
    Thanks for any help.

The multi-channel audio connections are only for multi-channel music (DVD audio or SACD), so if you're just watching movies, or listening to ordinary CDs, don't bother.

Yes, direct video input is probably the best option. Going through the amp is only for the convenience of video switching (which I'll admit to using) or if your amp has some sort of video scaling or upconversion which would benefit you in some way.
