I'm on the lookout for a new receiver to replace my sherwood DD amp - I'm on a tight budget so I'm looking for the cheapest 6.1 amp available - can anyone indicate if there is a model retailing for less than £600?

Denon AVR-3801 should sell for around GBP600.
Dolby Digital Ex, DTS Es and DTS Es Discrete (true 6.1) - anything else you need? [IMG]

I think you would be lucky to find the 3801 for less than £800 as it's a new model.
In fact, I don't think you will find anything EX "all in" for under £600.
Your best bet would be to go for one of the Pioneer models that are EX ready but only have 5 channels of amplification built in. You then save your penny's and buy a 2 channel amp, and, hey presto, Full blown EX.

There is a Sherwood Newcastle, the R-956R, which retails for £500. Although it has six channels, it is not licensed by either THX or Dolby, so it is not an official Surround EX product (or can the decoding be called "6.1").

There'll be a review of the unit in the May edition of HCC and you can take a sneaky peek inside the unit at: http://www.smr-group.co.uk/components/

    SDB 020 8742 2200
    Denon 3801 £599

    Bos Electronics 01895 636638
    Denon 3801 £599

    PRC 020 8470 3499
    Denon 3801 £649.95

I am not endorsing any of these companies and who is to say wether they actually have any 3801's in stock.
Just found them after having a VERY quick look through the last issue of HCC.

I am quite interested in this amp too and am in the process of trying to persaude my Wife to let me upgrade our Pioneer VSX 808 to the Denon.

Thanks for the info guys but there's one thing I forgot to mention - I still use my pioneer laserdisc - does anyone know if any of the mentioned amps can work in conjunction LD or via a modulator?

I dont think the 3801 has a specific LD input, but it does have a VCD input which can be used by the lD player.

It also has a co-ax digital input but it does not have an on board RF De-mod (or at least it dosn't say it has one in any review I Have read and on the Denon web site), so you will need to buy an external de-mod.

I think SDB are still selling the Pioneer and Sony de-mods for about £100.

In this month's T3: www.hotkit.co.uk have the 3801 for £569.99. If that price is real, then buy, buy, buy!!! Their phone number is 0845 8481444.

I'm sure I saw the 3801 advertised in T3 for £585. Can't remember who it was though. I'll check later and post it up here. If it's anything like as good as the 3300, it'll be a stormer!!
