If a Digital 8 camcorder (e.g. Sony TRV480E) has iLink DV Out will it output over this connection when a Hi-8 tape is being played ? I'm trying to find the optimum way of converting old Hi-8 tapes on to DVDs without using one of the expensive service providers.

I had no problem capturing my old Hi-8 tapes using my old digital 8 camcorder through the DV Out. Once on the PC, just edit as normal.

I then saved the edited footage onto new Mini DV Tapes (as well as onto DVD), just in case I ever needed them again.

Thanks for the reply. Would you recommend a specific model ? I only want to use it to transfer the Hi-8 tapes to DVD and will probably never use it again after that. I have a new Sony HC90E for new mini-DV recordings.

Only the top model supports Hi8 playback from the current range.
I would buy a 2nd hand model if it's only for the 1 job.

Thanks. I assume that this is the Sony TRV270E.

The following have backwards compatibility for Hi8 playback:
    2003 TRV355
    2004 TRV460
    2005 TRV480

Amazon doesn't note the Hi8 playback feature for the TRV270. Going further back I believe the 2002 TRV240 is ok, but you should check around from other sources. Sony's product numbering is somewhat odd. For example the TRV250 does not have Hi8 playback.

    Best regards,
    Silverrope

I have a TRV110 that does this fine. Email me and we may be able to help each other out.

Another option - if you don't actually need a camera is the Sony GVD 200E video walkman which will play Video8, Hi8 and Digital8 and has a comprehensive range of input / output connections including firewire. I have used this to transfer a large collection of Video8 tapes onto my PC and then onto DVD. The unit can also be used as a portable VCR. Unfortunately its not cheap. The best price seems to be Amazon at £450.
