Got this in an email today, and so much of it rang true (being of a certain age) :( ...

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL MY FRIENDS WHO WERE BORN IN THE 40's, 50's, 60's and early 70's !

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they carried us and lived in houses made of asbestos.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese, raw egg products, loads of bacon and processed meat, tuna from a can, and didn't get tested for diabetes or cervical cancer.

Then after that trauma, our baby cots were covered with bright coloured lead-based paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had no helmets or shoes, not to mention, the risks we took hitchhiking.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or air bags.

We drank water from the garden hose and NOT from a bottle.

Take away food was limited to fish and chips, no pizza shops, McDonalds , KFC, Subway or Nandos.

Even though all the shops closed at6.00pm and didn't open on the weekends, somehow we didn't starve to death!

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and NO ONE actually died from this.

We could collect old drink bottles and cash them in at the corner store and buy Toffees, Gobstoppers, Bubble Gum and some bangers to blow up frogs with.

We ate cupcakes, white bread and real butter and drank soft drinks with sugar in it, but we weren't overweight because...... WE WERE ALWAYS OUTSIDE PLAYING!!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of old prams and then ride down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. We built tree houses and dens and played in river beds with matchbox cars.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo Wii , X-boxes, no video games at all, no 999 channels on SKY, no video/dvd films, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet or Internet chat rooms..........WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

Only girls had pierced ears!

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

You could only buy Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns at Easter time...

We were given air guns and catapults for our 10th birthdays,

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just yelled for them!

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

RUGBY and CRICKET had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment. Imagine that!! Getting into the team was based on MERIT

Our teachers used to hit us with canes and gym shoes and bully's always ruled the playground at school.

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of... They actually sided with the law!

Our parents didn't invent stupid names for their kids like 'Kiora' and 'Blade' and 'Ridge' and 'Vanilla'

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned HOW TO DEAL WITH IT ALL !

And YOU are one of them!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated our lives for our own good.

And while you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave their parents were.

:D

:rotfl:

Rang true?

That's summed up my childhood to a tee!

I quite often feel sorry for kids these days.

Also:

Policemen were treated with a great deal of respect.

Schools didn't close if it snowed.

No double-glazing, central heating or insulation in houses.

Front doors left unlocked - no robbery because there was nothing to steal!

Everybody in the same street or road knew each other.

No computers, mobile phones or colour TVs.

Families spent hours talking to each other.

No soft toilet paper.

No supermarkets and no throwing out large amounts of packaging.

NO MONEY!

And its your kids that grew up in the pre 80's that have ruined it for kids born from the 80's onwards. (Tho i had a pretty good run in the 80's :D)

Glue was used to build Airfix models not sniff. Then you could paint them with your lead paint.

Meth's was used to power your steam Engine toy (which would often spill, and set fire to my carpet)

Bikes weighed half a ton, and if you were lucky had 3 gears.

When you ate chips from the chip shop you would also consume quite a lot of newspaper ink... it tasted nice.

You had to shake milk before you drink it, because of all the cream on the top.

Half a pee wasn't a condition of an old man sneezing.

Doc Martin shoes were cheap.

Everybody should have gone to specsavers, because glasses were always horrible.

Clackers were fun, but would cover your arms in bruises, and maybe shatter into your eye.

We used our pen knives to play splitz with our friends, not to stab them with ( a pen knife sticking out of your foot was considered unfortunate).

Splitz - forgot all about that.

Not to be played wearing flip-flops!

...and a fine job you lot are doing of running the country in the last 30 years. :D

Of course lets not let all the worm eating, no helmet wearing rant get in the way of the minor point that childhood mortality has fallen about 5 or 600% since 1970.

Very true, but what's the point if you can't have any fun?

Have you seen the miserable boatrace on an average 10 YO these days?
They look far too serious to me :thumbsdow

You can't beat some germs and a bit of risk :D

Splitz :rotfl:

I put my hand on a Dart Board, and let my half blind friend throw darts around it.. hit me in the joint of my finger. :D

I used to climb Pylons too.

Got arrested for biting the head of a parrot.. I didn't do it.

Got done for doing 68mph on my motorbike.............

.........through a red light.............

.... but not exactly through a red light........

.... because I was on the path at the time.....

....so I just got done for doing 68mph on the path.

Strange thing to say. I'll bite...

Fallen 600% since 1970 - where does that come from? Is that in Britain or Uganda?

Just think, if you put children in straight-jackets and locked them away in padded cells their mortality rate would be nearly zero.

Ha ha ha. Smiley face.

Childhood death rate used to be around 0.7 is now around 0.1.

Most of that is down to better medical care - especially in the early years.

But:

My kids (11,13 & 18) disappear off for the day quite often (only instruction is to phone if your staying somewhere else for tea), had swiss army knives for their 10th Birthdays, build ramps for bikes out of 'stuff', have dens up trees. They've got biblical names, and drink water from the hosepipe. Judging by the videos on facebook, the way they get down hills when it's been snowing is no different to we used to do.

Those of them that play sport, have to earn their place in the team. They drink full fat coke etc (because they need the energy) and they're not overweight.

But they do wear seat belts :)

rose tinted glasses are awesome arnt they;)

:D

Yeah, but don't forget we now have to pay for someone to sweep the chimney with a brush rather than borrowing the neighbours kids with a promise not to light the fire until they have re-appeared.

Mum didn't have to go to work to help dad make ends meet!

..and thats a good thing? Having mum stay at home doing the housework? At least she would have soft hands from doing the washing up with fairy liquid.....

Only girls had pierced ears!

That is ture.

Of couse in the future it will be 'Boys only had ONE ear pierced....'

Not sure if life was better or not tbh.

What I do know is that life was most certainly more simple when i was a kid and there was less pressure on kids (poxy exams and SAT's etc at the age of 9......).

All makes me a bit sad :(
