Can anyone help in explaining the differences as I'm confused having seen both advertised.

    Thanks

The 'Ai' version is newer than the 'i', offers 120W per channel rather than 100W, has a newer version of the MCACC setup routine inherited from the AX10, can upsample composite and s-video signals to component, provides 7.1 Prologic IIx rather than the older 5.1 Prologic II, has a more sturdy base and cast iron feet and does various other ninja stuff.

It's been said that the Ai does a better job musically than the older model. I used to have a VSX-D2011 and I can say that my VSX-AX5Ai is certainly more capable with music than that, but I never heard the older AX5i.
