as the title says what is the difference from normal DVDs? Better sound or PQ?
Do a search for Superbit and you'll find dozens of threads on this, but to sum it up, a Superbit DVD is a normal, red-book standard DVD, just like those produced by all the other manufacturers.
Superbit is not any kind of technical standard. It is basically a "marketing concept" by Columbia/Sony to tempt people to buy the same DVDs twice.
Basically, Columbia deliberately hold back on the best picture quality and DTS soundtrack on the initial release and then release the Superbit title with the pic quality and sound options that other companies give you as standard with their normal releases.
This was exposed in the very early days of the product. Several DVD mags did tests and found that DVDs from other companies (such as "Moulin Rouge" and several other extras-laden titles) that contained DTS and DD soundtracks as well as audio commentaries and extras, exhibited a higher bit rate and comparable or better picture quality than over 20 Superbit titles tested at the time.
Indeed an examination of most Superbit titles reveal that they use nowhere near the disk space available to maximise quality.
And so long as people continue to buy them, Columbia will continue with their scam.
Cheers for the heads up
Good old Columbia. Never a truer word spoken. It's a scam of the highest order. I have the following on Superbit though -
Closer, Black Hawk Down (for sound), Leon and The Fast and The Furious.
The last three I had already bought, but as they are favourites I fell into the trap. Indeed the PQ on the fast and furious is so awesome in superbit it couldn't be ignored.
