I know of the minor differences btwn the two models mentioned, but is there any difference in actual picture quality?
    Anyone compared?
Or are they exactly the same screens, with one bundled with an extra couple of gimmicks?

One has the DVB box, the other doesn't.
The XDE has PC input the fde does not
    XDE has PIP
    XDE has subwoofer out
    plus lots more.
It amazing what you can find out if you bother to go to the Pioneer web site and compare the two plasmas with the handy compare page!

Thanks Alan - though why be helpful then rude?????

    My question was as follows:
Suprisingly enough on the Pioneer website it doesnt tell you this. Im aware of the other differences and dont consider them a big deal, which is why i also said

    Anyone else know?

Hi Stampax. Before buying my XDE I had a close look at both and was suprisingly disappointed by the FDE's picture. This seemed to be supported by general discussion on this site at the time (January 05).The rags also slated the FDE while giving the XDE a glowing report,if you feel inclined to take any notice of their opinions.I suspect part of the reason the FDE always looked poor was that it was generally being seen in Currys etc where it was being fed a poor analogue signal.I plumped for the XDE because I anticipated the sd card compatability would be useful, and it has been.As yet I've not connected my PC,it's on my to do list.I've obviously not got an FDE at home to compare, but I would pass two comments regarding the picture.
The original (2 year old) aerial I had was,I thought, quite adequate for my previous digibox and gave a reasonable picture on the plasma but would not pull in channel 5.Four days later I spent £250 on a new aerial and cabling, and what a difference it made.So you've got to feed it a good signal.
Having done this there is a noticeable difference between the analogue and digital pictures.Digital is stunning, analogue is merely good.So if you do intend to buy an FDE feed it a good signal via a good digibox and forget analogue (assuming of course digital is available in your area).
    Regards
    Ian

    Drd,

Can you expand on the SD card functionality? I've read the specs and understood there was a PC card slot, but I didn't realise it was SD?

    Thanks,
    Dave.

    Alan A,

Quote 'It amazing what you can find out if you bother to go to the Pioneer web site and compare the two plasmas with the handy compare page!'

I hope none of your posts are answered in the same way as your condescending reply.

I'd be surprised to see any plasma manufacturer compare the PQ of their plasma range on the handy compare page.

You can see that they are the same screen from the Pioneer comparison page. I just get fed up of people failing to do their basic homework by taking a few seconds to check the manufacturers web pages and expecting everyone else to do it for them instead.
it is the "benefit society" mentality of the UK today where people want everyone else to work for them that winds me up.
Call it condesending if you will.

Fair point Alan but why did you bother to reply in the first place.I agree with you that there are far too many people on forums who can't be bothered to do a basic search themselves but in this instance whilst the FDE and XDE supposedly use the same screen many reviews/users maintain there are some differences and Stampax did mention this in his post.

In the USA there are similar questions about whether "Elite" models have better picture quality compared to the normal line (they don't have FDE and XDE, they have normal line and "Elite").

Some people claim the "Elite" has a better scaler/deinterlacer built in. Other people say that's a myth. Nobody seems to know for sure...
