I have been on the phone with everyone and everyone else too, regarding what to do with the firmware faults on the DVD737. And it's Catch 22 as usual. What is the problem? 1.) Severe banding artifacts caused by the Smart Picture feature. 2.) Raised black level (in PAL!). 3.) Picture displaced to the right because of faulty treatment of digital blanking. So the picture looks like a washed out animated GIF, that is shifted to the right. That's the problem. Customer support says I should go back to the store and send the whole machine in for service, in spite of it being a firmware error that affects every DVD737 carrying the same firmware, and which their service partner would not be able to correct anyway. I then spoke to their service partner directly, and they say that they cannot do anything but upgrade the existing firmware (which I can actually download myself from Club Philips), for anything else they send the whole player down to Philips service center in Belgium. But the player already have the latest firmware, and what I want is for Philips to correct the issues in the next release. A Philips product manager I spoke to said that if there are any problems with picture quality, it is because the DVD's do not follow the norm. He also threatened me that they won't repair the machine if I tampered with it by upgrading the firmware myself (which is downloadable by end users, straight from the official Club Philips site, as they bloody intended!). He started accusing me of this without me even stating I had done so (and incidentally I had not, since the machine came with the latest firmware installed). I got the phone number for another manager, who won't be back until Monday. Probably. Now, it's war. Again.
