I just received my copy of Die Another Day from Future Ent. In some scenes the pic is awful on my HK DVD25.

In particular, towards the end where bond dumps a ferrari in a paddy field, the car has awful edge enhancement.

The following scene shows Moneypenny type on a computer, the text is unreadable.

Is my player at fault or has anyone else noticed this?

    I don't think it's your player mate.

    http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=6472

All other reviews I've read mention quite bad EE.

The unreadable text may be due to EE as well.

...and the R2 edition is no better in this respect.

Why, oh, why do DVD masterers insist on destroying films in this way? And why, oh, why, do so FEW reviewers spot the problem and rate video quality down as a result?

To me, this artefact is more distracting than the occasional scratch, hair, or graininess, that reviewers so often DO pick up on.....

i would prefer far less extras on the disks
in favour of better compression ratios.

maybe edge enhancement is not quite the effect i'm seeing.

The ferrari doesn't have a glow all the way around, it's like its out of focus and there appears to be more than one car.

When any film is scanned, the scanned picture is always softer than the film stock version so they sharpen it.

That is why Lucas wanted to use digital cameras to avoid the loss of quality caused by film scanning.

The telecine process is the same I guess.

Maybe so, but there are plenty of examples where EE is much less intrusive - the original Starship Troopers, Species are a couple I've watched recently, and there are many other examples.

another thing i found on the region 2 version, was the soundtrack [explosions etc,] was much louder than the speech from the centre channel..even tweaking it did,nt resolve it....good movie though....

Proper full resolution film scanning does not result in significant softening. Certainly not to the extent that it would be noticable on a video res subsample. In fact film scanning is so good you can normally get away with using a 2K ( half res..... fullap film res is regarded as being 4096x3112) proxy version and it will be acceptable on film projection.

There is the option of applying aperture correction at scan but its way more subtle than nasty edge enhancement... we'd throw the scan back if we could see ringing.

Lucas wanted to use digital because he's lucas and he could end of story. The colourspace , resolution and intensity response of the digital system lucas used is way below a decent film scan.

The telecine process these days is similar to film scanning techniques in that they used film scanning techniques to improve telecine operations. Spirit datacines do actually have edge enhancement built into them which is something they get a lot of criticism for... I think we tweaked ours to knock it back a bit but its impossible to get it off entirely. However you should still be able to get it down enough so that it effectively disappears on a video res image.

Also I didn't notice anything too awful with the region2 of DAD.

I watched Die Another Day 2 days ago, I didn't notice any distracting edge enhancement on my 32inch widescreen tv
i use a Toshiba dvd player and i did try using a cheap player once and noticed a ringing edge enhancement effect so i know for a fact some players can introduce a halo effect depending on how u output the video to ur tv

I watched the Reg 2 last night and I thought the picture in places wasn't very good it seemed to have a slight tinge (spelling) similar to the Matrix a kind of bluey grey?
also the sound broke up for a split secound three times on the dts soundtrack, does this disk cause any problems with older DVD players I have the Tosh 2109.

    cheers Dave.

You don’t mean on the title track that is sung by Madonna as it is meant to be like that.

JUst busy writing the review of the R1 disc, it has quite a few picture problems, as well as dts dropouts and bad lipsync.

This has to be the worst dvd transfer I've ever seen from a major studio.

Even the extras are poor quality.

As for the film, I missed it at the pix and thought "Hey, why not get the dvd?"

    an invisible car

What was the director smoking ?

The R2 version also suffers from EE, but I'm willing to bet that its still better than the R1 version.

Watched this (R2) yesterday and for a change, didn't notice any EE - Hey, I saw it on Clones so I thought I would always see it. I had the dts dropout a couple of times but it was due to dirt on the disc. The bad picture at the start had me puzzled for a bit but if you watch the 'digital grading' feature on disc 2, all is explained. One thing to note about the commentary - Rosamund Pike had the most beautiful voice.

I have both the R2 and R1 discs, and the R1 is definitely the worst offender in the edge enhancement stakes, though R2 is not exactly a great picture either.
