Thought we should create a separate thread for this to discuss race tactics, equipment, etc.

I've completed the quest on my hunter - the reward is an emblem with the SRL colours on it.

I've tried a few different sparrows. In my experience the boost sparrows are the worst - too clumsy and bouncy. Although occasionally boosting round a corner can help straighten you up. The stunt sparrows are pretty good with good cornering and best at recovering from a bad bounce on landing.

But my preference is the braking sparrows. They can sometimes lose it when you land hard from a jump, but on some corners the braking can help you get round quicker, or a quick adjustment to get a gate.

Anyone else have any suggestions for a good sparrow? Is there a specific version of any of them that is any better?

I've got all the armour too. The only thing that seems to make a difference is the helmet which lets you land quicker or stay in the air longer. It is definitely worth getting the cloak / bond / mark as that increases your SRL rep gains by 15%.

I've had a 303 helmet and a 299 cloak so far. You can also get chests too, but best I've had is about 290.

Not seen any gloves or boots with light on them yet.

I also had a helmet with 3 light. Yes 3!

Mean to add, my hunter is up to 313 and my titan 316. Wearing the gear drops that to the low 200s.

I haven't found the light level to make any difference. I've not tried changing my character to boost agility to see if that helps. Does anyone know if it does?

I've not used a trick sparrow but I agree the braking sparrow (where right trigger swings it round) is faster or at least feels that way, the races can be so variable it's hard to tell what is actually faster. I was using Timebreaker initially and on full right trigger boost it was clearly faster in a straight line as I could scorch away on the start finish line but of course it can't sustain that boost and with all the noise from the sparrows around it's easy to miss the fatal warning beeps that you're pushing it too hard.

One of the armour perks that I haven't unlocked that looks useful is a reduction in the dodge recharge time, there's some sections I find the dodge very useful if I get out of shape from a boost gate (such as the half pipe section near the end of the Venus track just before you hit the teleport) and when in the lead and trying to get the narrow boost gates.

Something I've been wondering is whether the shortcuts are worth taking or not such as the one mid way round the Venus track where you can go up to the left and avoid a tight left/right or on Mars where you also go up to the left and take a tight right rather than go left right under the ramp. The problem with the shortcuts is there are no boost gates and in both those cases if you take the shortcut you miss two boost gates, I noticed if I take the normal route cleanly that those that took the shortcut get out slightly ahead of me but then I easily overtake them due to the loss in speed from missing the boost gates.

Also this may be a daft question but what is the point in the SRL rank? I ranked up but don't remember actually getting anything although may have got a piece of armour and not realised it.

You probably did get something for going to a rank. Check your inventory as you may have a toolkit that opens as something new.

I did get the toolkit for getting the A-license, I had 15 racing items at the postmaster (mix of different armour) so it could have been one of them that was from ranking up.

Since the last update now a win in crucible (or top 3 in rumble) is the same as killing an ultra.

Completing a sparrow race is counted as a crucible win too. So pop a 3oc before every race.

On Wednesday I got 3 exotics in about 7 races. It's not usually that generous but with a race lasting 5 mins this is the quickest way to farm exotics other than the scourge of winter mission.

This is better though because the 3oc cool down will have expired, you can drop other loot and you get crucible & faction rep for every race.

If you are over 300 light is there a chance the exotic engram will decode to 310 or do you have to be 311+? I've not been using 3oc as I have a variety of exotics so 290 exotics aren't much use but 310 ones definitely would be.

I'd love to see (and would pay) for more tracks, I'll probably back off the races a bit shortly but even as is it's nice to have a change of scene to mix in with other events - did some mayhem rumble last night then a few races to finish the night off. I was working on my hunter who hasn't done any SRL racing yet and still on trusty Timebreaker which definitely is faster in the straights so I was boosting hard on the start finish straight amongst another group of sparrows and was sure to get my top 3 place until I realised I could just hear the BEEP BEEP BEEP but it was too late :(

If you are 300+ then there is a chance of getting a 310 exotic, if you are 311+ you always get a 310 exotic.

Thanks, so I guess it is worth doing as I'm not short of strange coins and doing a few races anyway.

Argh! Just need one more win, had led the entire race and was on the last bit on Mars where you go through the building then onto the finish line then Sparrow just suddenly got stuck backwards in the ground mid-boost?!

Oh well, at least I still have I don't know how many hundred races to go to Crucible Rank 3.

I didn't know you could get on the top of that Fallen ship like that as shown in the video. I'm not sure about the shortcuts though, I've seen some people who manage on both of them to take the first boost gate and quickly dodge left to take the shortcut so they only miss one gate but that looks tough to pull off. I find getting both gates and smoothly going through the longer route (a couple of dodges definitely helps on the Venus one to get a clean line) doesn't lose you much ground and you come onto the sections after at a higher speed than those who took the shortcut.

What governs high level light gear drops, is it SRL rank or having the S-license?

Rank, at level 2 you get gear up to 310 light and at level 3 it's up to 320 light !

That's good news as I thought it might be rank 3 and 5 similar to Iron Banner.

Rewards at rank 3 are pretty good, so far I've got Helmets at 320, 316, 314, 312 and a 319 Warlock bond and that's from about 10 races after reaching rank 3 :)

I had a 316 cloak and 311 helmet so far. And roughly one exotic per 5 races

Is anyone having trouble levelling the racing helmet? I've been pouring all my bounties in it every day since I got it (on the first or second day) and it's been enough experience to fully level two exotic heavies but I still haven't even started unlocking the pitch control perk, strangely it's started unlocking the infusion one below it first although it's crawling along. Stranger still is that it shows that I have the pitch control perk unlocked but I definitely can't choose it.

I'm wondering if it's best to get another helmet and start again although I'm concerned another one will do the same.

Edit - Sorted itself out on the first Vanguard bounty I cashed in today, went from no progress to fully unlocked in one go
