Destiny sequel coming in 2017, after an expansion this year

Destiny 2 Launching in 2017; "Large" New Expansion Coming This Year

Destiny will receive an expansion in 2016, followed by a full sequel in 2017, Activision announced today.

Few details are available presently, but Activision describes this year's expansion as a "large new" one. This suggests it could be on par with The Taken King, rather than the smaller Dark Below or House of Wolves DLC releases. That's merely speculation at this point, however.
There's even less to go on regarding the sequel. Activision calls it a "full game sequel" that's due out in 2017.
Activision is set to host a conference call with investors this afternoon. We'll update this post with any additional information it shares.

Destiny is getting a proper sequel, but not until 2017, publisher Activision confirmed today in the earnings report for its 2015 fiscal year. Activision also said Destiny developer Bungie expects to release a "large new expansion" for the game in 2016.

Taken from the Weekly Update News > This Week At Bungie – 02/11/2016 | Bungie.net

This week at Bungie Crimson Doubles is in full swing, but that’s not the only dance afoot.

Prior to the holiday break we mentioned a second, larger update slated for Spring. That content release will feature a significant Light increase, a bunch of new gear to earn and equip, and new challenges for PvE players seeking some more fun experiences and replayability.

Beyond that, the team is focused on delivering a large expansion later this year, and a full Destiny sequel in 2017.

As work wraps up in the weeks ahead, look for more details about the Spring content, as well as more information about our bigger projects in the months that follow.

Thanks for your patience, and thanks for playing.

Is this the 'don't leave us for the division' spring dlc announcement ;)
Yeah, or the result of the "what do you mean Destiny 2 won't be ready till 2017? Well make something up to tell them quick, or by the time it's ready no one will remember what Destiny was!!" conversation between Activision and Bungie.

If it being delayed means we get a better game then I'm fine with that. Needs better story, better characters that you actually care about, next gen only and a clear road map of content going forward amoungst many other things.

One thing that may put me off is if they stick with the current loot/light system. The double RNG of 1. Waiting for a drop and then 2. hoping said drop was a higher light level than what you already had soon wore very thin for me. Much preferred the old systems from year one.

Also means it wont clash with Mass Effect Andromeda which is important. Mass Effect take precedence over any other game for me so if it was out this autumn it wouldnt be getting played anyway.

I know I'll be getting this one from Canada that's for sure. Probably won't get the super version with season pass this time though. Once bitten twice shy.

Jumping back in for the sequel then?

It'll be funny to see everyone that said they are done with Destiny buy the second game, than complain about that 4 months in

No not at all i just got some buddies of mine have swore up and down to me that they would never play Destiny or Destiny 2 ever again due to the issues they dealt with, but we all know those people and we all know that they will buy it.

I'm all for complaints when it is due, I'm sure we all will have some things to say if destiny 2 ever comes out

I hope they have learnt a lot from the feedback from this one for the second on. Sorting out the terrible RNG system for a starter would be an improvement!!!

They should never have announced that there would be no more significant DLC for Destiny. I think they realise that was a mistake as it put people off playing any more.

Now they have seen the negative impact of that and to counter defection to Division and soften a pretty late release of Destiny 2 they suddenly have a ton of DLC!

I am sure it will get me playing Destiny again if it has a RAID in it.

Destiny 2 - hopefully they will drop legacy system support on that...I assume they are.

I can't think how long it's been since I last played.

If I'm honest I would look forward to the enjoyable moments of new Raids but the thought of spending countless hours getting to the right level to Raid leaves me wanting to give the game a miss.

Good little page here on all the latest about Destiny 2:

‘Destiny 2’ Rumor Round-Up: What we know about the game coming after ‘Rise of Iron’

For me it would be a massive let down if you can't take existing characters through to the sequel, although I'm not sure why I think it's important... as apart from gear (which would be obsolete) there's not really much you can do to customise after the initial face setup.
I think it has to be a new game entirely myself, apart from cosmetic items and the characters (reset to level zero)

My Titan is as handsome as me and my warlock is so hot you will burn your eyes and my robot thing whatever they are) ...well I have just got used to him!

But apart from characters make up I think you should be able to take the moments of triumph emblems and that is it.

I'm expecting them to change quite a bit for sequel, partly to freshen it up and partly because they aren't shackled by the older gen consoles any more. A few things like this wouldn't surprise me :

* Making the world more seamless. Each area/planet would just be like a massive "open world" style section, much larger than current patrol areas with much more to do and all missions/strikes/raids starting seamlessly.

* 60pfs. Quickly becoming the norm for shooters nowadays, can't be left behind.

* A complete overhaul of the inventory system. Far too many currencies and issues with vault space. They should get rid of a lot of it and simplify it massively. I also think there should be kiosk style options for everything above blue level. Got a legendary and sharded it? Should be a way to get it back somehow, at an in game cost.

* An in game "LFG" style system. Doesn't have to be user complicated, some kind of server browser style options for finding team mates is overdue I think.

* In game characters will carry their history across, but not all their gear or light levels. Possible rewards for achieving old milestones such as shaders maybe.

There are just a few :)

well I think they did a huge amount right with Destiny. Any game that tries to have players play constantly suffers complaints.... look at WOW forums ...even before it was released..

I would like to see a complete wipe, nothing carried over from Destiny apart from maybe the emblems we earned.

Big co-op events I would like to see as the focus. raids are all that made Destiny long term in my view, but they need to make sure they work better as they allowed major game breaking bugs ruin them last time - Crota's End being the big problem.

More co-op, more team work, more diversity with co-op activity.

and major improve has to be a better story

Characters and their legacy will carry over.

The Road Ahead > News | Bungie.net

"We know that, just like us, you have grown fond of the Guardians you’ve created, so we do plan to preserve your character personalization. We are going to recognize the dedication and passion you’ve shown for this world. Specifically, the class, race, gender, face, hair, and marking selections for all characters that have achieved Level 20 and completed the Black Garden story mission will carry forward. We also plan to award those veteran accounts with honors that reflect your Destiny 1 accomplishments.
We believe this is the best path forward. It allows us to introduce the major advancements and improvements that all of us expect from a sequel, ensuring it will be the best game we can create, unencumbered by the past. We’re looking forward to sharing more details with you later this year for how we will honor your legacy in the future."

Nice! PS4 early access to the beta sounds good! Same as the first one IIRC.

Now give us a trailer and hard info.
