We haven't seen one of these for a while, so here we go.

Which 10 film would you take with you to a desert island?

You can have a bit of leaway with trilogies, etc, and if you can only get it down to a dozen I won't cross you off my Christmas Card List.

ps, Yes, the island has the facility to show the films. :smashin:

Right, to get the ball rolling...

Kind Hearts and Coronets (Robert Hamer 1949)
A Matter of Life and Death (Michael Powell & Emeric Pressburger ["The Archers"] 1946)
OldBoy (Chan-wook Park 2003)
Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino 1994)
The Swimmer (Frank Perry 1968)
The Third Man (Carol Reed 1949)
Vertigo (Alfred Hitchcock 1958)

Hmmm, this isn’t easy…

2001: A Space Odyssey

Take the Money and Run

Rashomon

Dr: Strangelove

The Jerk

Forbidden Planet

Babel

Psycho

Ed Wood

Eraserhead

If you ask me tomorrow, I might choose a different top ten - apart from 2001 - :D

It isn't easy at all, is it.

I think most of my Top 10 would be pretty static, but make it a Top 20 or 30 and they'd come and go like nobody's business.

BTW, I just did a quick summary of mine.

'40's 4
'50's 1
'60's 1
'70's 1
'80's 1
'90's 1
'00's 1

UK 3
US 6
Other 1 (Korea) **

Colour 6
B&W 3
Mix 1

1.37:1 = 4
1.85:1 = 5*
2.35:1 2

* I've counted Vertigo as 1.85:1, as that's the closest of the 3 options. The exact intended ratio is arguable - it was shot open matt at c.1.5:1, but was probably intended to be viewed at 1.85:1.

Steve W

** Of course, if you go by director, Hitch was a Brit, so that's UK 4/US 5.

Oooh it is a difficult question!

LotR: Fellowship of the Ring
Lost in Translation
Almost Famous
American Beauty
Tom Yum Goong
Old Boy
Initial D
It's a Wonderful Life
Rockstar :D
Finding Nemo

Think I've got all my bases covered there... maybe... can I come back and edit this list in an hour?! ;)

Edit: Steve W has 11 titles (2 Godfathers) so I'm taking the LotR Trilogy!!!

There are just so many films that I love, I think I could have a top 100 desert island films….

That's fine.

As I said, I don't mind including trilogies, etc anyway. But especially with films like LOTR & Godfather 1/2, they're really just one story told over several films. The Godfather films were actually cut together for one particular TV showing, and I'm sure they'd do the same with LOTR if they thought our bladders could stand it.

Probably can do better.

I like that list - it's unashamedly fun.

Indeed, one thing I didn't say in post #1 was how long you were staying of the island. This may effect your choice.

I mean if I were going for a month I'd pick 10 films I'd never seen.

Steve W

Oh i see so its like a month on the Isle of man or something. :rotfl:

Godfather I & II
Empire Strikes Back
2001
How to Murder Your Wife
Trainspotting
Dracula ( 1931 )
Fargo
Shawshank Redemption
Ben Hur ( 1959 )
Castaway :rotfl:

Okey dokey:

Jaws
Airplane
This is Spinal Tap
Ong Bak
Casablanca
Ghostbusters
Bourne Ultimatum
Raiders of the Lost Ark
2001: A Space Odyssey
Fight Club

These are 10 films I could quite happily watch over and over forever, but are not necessarily what I would consider the 'greatest' films ever.

And if I could take a TV show in my hand luggage I'd take the first series of Arrested Development:D

Yes, I've got 'better' films in my collection too, but I think you'd want a mix.

Keep 'em coming, folks.

I notice a few have come up several times - I'll do an audit after a while to see which ones are proving most popular.

Steve W

Alien
American Beauty
Fight Club
Finding Nemo
Godfather Part I
Godfather Part II
Moulin Rouge
Music and Lyrics
Pulp Fiction
Scarface

Ok I'll have a go...

LOTR Special Edition trilogy.

What with all the extras, those would probably keep me going for an entire month on their own, but here are some more...

Grosse Pointe Blank
Fargo
Magnolia
Back to the Future Trilogy
Seven Samurai
Goodfellas
2001 A Space Odyssey
Saving Private Ryan
Pulp Fiction

I wish these lists could be longer. There are so many more I'd want to take with me too .
