Departed - Foul Language

I actually think The Departed is a fairly poor movie, and all the swearing in the world wouldn't make it "realistic".

Although I do not agree with you in that I think it is a fairly poor movie, I do not think it was as good as it was being hyped up to be (perhaps indicative of the dearth of good films around these days that decent ones are held up as 'fantastic').

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed it. But I have read some reviews and scores of it on the internet and you'd think it was the best film ever.

Its a very very good film, but I don't think it is a masterpiece as some are calling it. I do not think it is anywhere near as good as Goodfellas. Scorese should have got the Oscar for that (or Raging Bull) - now he gets it by default because there is no major competition or because the Academy thinks they owe him one.

So want don't I like about it? Well firstly, and I do not know if I will be able to describe this properly or not, but it comes across as a little contrived. Almost trying too hard to be gritty and harsh. It is almost that all the characters are stereotypes of ones you have seen in other gangster films. And they are played OTT to try to add 'realism'. Hence the massive amount of cursing that started this thread.

And I read that some people think that Wahlberg was fantastic - well his character for me just sums up all I'm trying to say. His performance was so OTT I found it a bit laughable. There is no way that any real person working in such a department would act like that (reminded me of parts of Al Pacinos performance in Heat - just not realistic).

Anyway, rant over. Definitely an excellent film, but not a 95/100 as I read somewhere.

Have to agree with you there. Mark Wahlberg's character was totally over the top and indeed laughable- totally unbelievable that anyone would act that way in real life.
Usually such a good performer, too. Perhaps should blame the part that was written for his character rather that Mark himself.

Glad to hear someone agrees with me. I thought by posting this that I would get slated for not having a clue about cinema !!

But the best cinema has characters that are realistic and believeable - when they act so OTT it takes away from it I think.

I am right, aren't I? This did win the Best Picture oscar, didn't it?

I thought it was an OK movie, but it felt like Scorsese-Lite.

Jack Nicholson being allowed to improvise is a bad idea, IMO. He just didn't scare me. His character was too OTT. Not a monster, more of a cartoon.

Markie-Mark was a little ripe too...and what was with that haircut?

I also thought Ray Winstone wasn't much cop. Again; just not scarey enough.

Liked Leo and even Matt Damon.

Having seen Infernal Affairs (part one only), some of the shock factor was obvioulsy reduced. Wished it had ended as per Infernal Affairs I.

I watched this today. I felt the lannguge considering the Director and where the location is was not OTT. It wasn't nearly as volient as I was expecting.

I thought it was a excellent film but it isn't as good as Infernal Affairs which is not surprising as I haven't found a Hollywood remake to be better yet. I would give it 7.5 /10 whereas the orginal is a easy 8.5/10 (maybe even a 9).

I agree with the original poster. The language was way over the top and distracted from the film. It made the professional officers seem not so professional.

 Ps. Mark Whalberg was his usual self - crap! He's no actor and is the same in every film. I found his character very irritating. So glad he didn't win an Oscar, however he was nominated which was a real surprise. That's some hair do he had too!!

that was intentional. they were making the police seem more realistic than the perfectionists/professionals that appear in every other movie. the language helped make marky mark appear like the ******** his character was, and helped make jack nicholson seem so evil. i think most of the swearing in the film was just from those 2 characters alone

HA, HA!! Level what ever accusations at this movie you want, but Mark Wahlbergs's performance was excellent, and this is from someone that previously wanted to starve him of air. Matt Damon managed to make his character so damn smug and unlikeable, and I usually like this actor. But then that's acting, isn't it?

Great movie! I didn't even notice the language cause to be honest unless you live in the hills in a church somewhere then you hear this language everyday. I thought Mark Whalberg was great. Everyone in that movie acted great.

Well, I am one of the uneducated riffraff, I swear like a trooper. The C word is used daily. I stub my toe...C*** . My mate takes the p*** ...F*** OFF ,you C*** :) . Boss tells me to do something...B****x :D .Of course , when in the company of people I dont know..or my mum..I wouldnt dream of swearing.

As for swearing in films, doesnt bother me in the least. As long as it fits in with what is happening, and it appears to be how you would expect the characters to talk. Must admit, I am still taken aback when I hear the C word , not because I am offended ,but because it is used so little. Was certainly shocked when it was used in An Officer And A Gentleman. Although shocked is probably OTT, I suppose surprised would be more like it.

i don't think i could really rate marky marks acting skills as he seems to be typecast as an idiot ******** in most movies. maybe he isn't like that in really life and is really a bit of a luvvy, like ben kingsley or john malkovich, and is just fantastic at playing the part

or maybe not... :D

but i do like him in films usually, like boogie nites, 3 kings, rockstar, italian job. ok, not exactly arty farty movies, but i enjoyed them. rockstar is a cheesefest, but i like those music movies

i actually have marky marks cd, which wasn't really that bad actually, but no-one would ever admit it. mind i've got thousands of cds, most of them cool and credible, so i can justify having a dozen or so cheesy discs as i they were for dj mixing purposes :D

I really disliked the movie not because of the language which, if I'm honest, I didn't notice. A very poor movie with some awful performances and accents topped off with Nicholson doing whatever it is he does. But a lot of other people seem to like it so must see something in it that I don't. Mark Wahlberg got an Oscar nomination? I thought he was laughable.

That Scorsese should win his Oscar with this is a bit of an insult. Better than Goodfellas, better than Raging Bull, better than Taxi Driver, The Last Temptation Of Christ, Casino even? Go figure.

.... or as Costello might say, Go mother ****ing ****ing b******ing a*** figure! **** you very much.

So glad he didn't win an Oscar, however he was nominated which was a real surprise.

I expected it to get Oscar nominations as it is by Scorsese and they like to put him somewhere in the nominations however, I can't take the Oscars seriously anymore since Titanic got best picture.

i thought jack nicholson was great in it, i'm a fan of jack and i thought that was one of his best performances, at least in a long time

about the oscars tho, you win against the other nominations in that year, so departed won as the competition wasn't so great. what you should be complaining about is those other movies not winning in the appropriate years. there's a fair few great movies who lost out to long forgotten lesser films

mind, not always forgotten....

personally my 3 faves are goodfellows, casino and departed, and i've got all his major pictures on dvd (at least once)

So you show your parents respect but not work colleagues or friends or indeed strangers ?

If swearing profusely is such a cool and normal thing - then surely it shouldn't be hidden from anyone ?

what ever you do dont watch jay and slient bob :rotfl:

It is possible to know you're audience. This is where the respect comes in.

This is what the poster was saying, the poster you gave this response to.

The poster said that they wouldn't say particular swear words in front of their parent. They didn't say that they would swear in front of everyone else.

Just to chime in watched this on HD-DVD last weekend and thought the film was excellent.

Anyhow back on topic i was not disturbed by the language in the film if im being honest its nothing i havnt heard nor used before.

Guess it comes from your walk of life in a sense as coming from liverpool nothing shocks me these days and the particular words used didnt offend me nor the people i watched the film with 4 lads aged 21-23 :D
