Had a filling done yesterday, first work I've had done for about ten years (ish).
Been with the same guy for over [-]twenty[/-] thirty years now and he's the one health professional that I actually trust (by far). I'm dreading the day he retires.

What are your experiences going to the dentists?

Sometimes I think they do work where none is necessary but generally they are good.

happy as larry with mine, had some dentures fitted yesterday,no problems whatsoever. very pleased

Any dentist who says, "You don't really need an anaesthetic, this'll only take a minute" is a liar.

I've had the same dentist my entire life (I think). I've got no complaints.

My current one is very good (NHS), I used to have dental work done in Spain but with the pound being virtually the same value as the euro I don't bother anymore :(

Have switched dentists once. All our family used one dentist surgery for a good few years but got told about some others who were highly recommended.

It was only after we switched that we realised what a mistake it was staying at the last one.

in my student days i signed upto a dental practice nearby, i didnt realise they were mostly newly trained dentists, the very worst thing they did to me (and they did a fair few painful things) was cauterize part of my gum forgetting to inject any anaesthetic at all, i almost passed out with the worst pain i have ever endured and its the only time i have ever come close to hitting a woman.......

Recently changed dentist went back to NHS as private was getting too expensive

Dentist is Greek with limited english in and out in 5 mins, easiest £16.50 ever

Mrs C *never* has anaesthetic . Scares me to death.:eek::eek:
Same here. The first time I had the drill and the cold air/water jet thingy it was excruciating. Took all of my will power not to grab his hands to stop him from proceeding.

The last time I had any work done I insisted on getting a local and I kept telling him that it wasn't working so he'd have to shoot me up with more of it. Couldn't feel the bottom half of my face for six or seven hours. Worth it.

That's my experience too.
The trouble I have is that my NHS practice seem unable to keep a dentist for more than 18 months.
Twice now I've needed treatment over 2 or 3 appointments, but because the dentist wouldn't be there long enough to complete it , they wouldn't even start. Not good!
It's only the ridiculous costs that are stopping me going back to a private dentist.

Just out of interest, what are you paying? My filling cost me £30.

Edit:
I think that might have included the prior check up and XRay as well.

£16.50 for a check up, something like £48 for filling(s), up to a maximum of £198 for any complex treatment. Don't quote me on the exact figures, but they around that.
£30 sounds very reasonable. I assume that is private?

Mine's an olympic gold medalist and I think he's great, honestly:blush:

no probs here , not had to have any work done on my meat grinders though as was always told to look after them by my mother

"First thing girls look for is a nice smile"

Obviously as you get older you know it's something else :p

NHS (I think ) just been with the same guy since 1981.

Ah OK. That makes sense then. £16.50 for the check up + £30 for the filling.
£46.50 could well be the correct figure. I did say don't quote me about £48.:D
I have been more than happy with all of my dentists. It's just that they don't stick around long enough. Just when I've learned to trust them they leave.:(

I used to have a terrible fear of the dentist. I had a dreadful experience having a tooth extracted which stopped me going. Consequently the next time I went five years later I had to have a further three teeth pulled.

I spent the best part of £2k going to a hypnotist trying to get over my fear. It really did screw my life up during my early twenties (stupid as it may sound).

I now go to one which specialises in nervous patients. As soon as you walk in you are given a tv remote to control the plasmas in the ceiling when you are in the chair. There is also a nurse whose only job is to hold your hand and tell you how brave you are!!!

Costs a fortune but it has got me going again and I have not needed any work for 6 years.
