i have to go to the dentists soon, due to a local dentist butchering my teeth a few years back i now have a fear.
this dentist drilled a tooth and cracked it which also cracked the one next to it and i had to endure stitches in the gums after the two teeth had to be pulled,i was told on the wednesday i had it done to come back monday for the check up etc and when i did go back the practice was closed, it had been shut down and the people in charge were sent to prison for fraudulent claims on peoples treatment!!
now i have to go to a new dentist for the first time in years and im honestly scared:eek:
any advice on what i can do to get rid of my dentist fears.if i dont i think the new dentist may get his fingers bitten off

If it is a private dentist then they will offer sedation by an intravenous shot of valium - costs about £30-£40, but boy is it worth it...they could chop your arms off and you would not be bothered as you will be away with the fairies.

I have the injection every time I need some work done - and this included deep root canal surgery and removal of a root, and consequent stitches in the gum.

Watch the programme, "Britain's Worst Teeth".....truly shocking what happens to your teeth should you fail to go to the dentist or not look after your teeth properly.

lol,

I'm off to the dentist tomorrow, AGGGGGGGH!

Its a new dentist I'm seeing. The last one didn't let me breath, and I had to cough and say "er, excuse me I need to breath" lol

There are a couple of threads here about dental fear, one started by myself. It's unfortunate that you had such an awful dental experience and I'm sure your appointment will be dandy. A fear of the dentist is very common, tell your dentist you're nervous and s/he will make you feel much better - at least mine does!

What is it specifically that you're scared of?

Nick.

needles in the mouth, poking around in the mouth, just dont like it at all

Just make sure your underpants are still on and not back to front when you leave! It isn't just your mouth they are interested in!

lol, are you talking from experience??
cheers

I used to be petrified of the Dentist . (Car accident as a kid , smashed up mouth , plastic tooth guards glued in for 12 months etc etc , Treatment went on 'til I was old enough to say I aint going back) .
If you explain to the Dentist your fears , its a lot different now to how it was 20 if not 10 years ago , they will take you through it step by step. Only doing what you are comfortable with .
Its quite perverse , but I actually find it quite relaxing now . The last time I had anything major done , I found myself drifting off .
If you don't tell him your shitting a brick , he won't know and will just "go at it " so to speak .
Good luck . Its always worth remembering , most things can be sorted inside 15 minutes , maybe 30 . Toothache can keep you up all night for days at a time . Thats not pleasent.
It also helps if the nurse in remotely decent , don't want to look like a wooss infront of a loverlee ladee ;)

It's all about finding the right dentist more than anything else.

If you find one who always tells you what he is planning to do before he does it and always keeps you informed you will be ok.

If you feel that you cannot speak to the dentist, then it's best to find someone else.

My current dentist is ace in that he will always let me know what he is planning to do before he does it. When i was young I had a few bad dentists who never thought twice about drilling teeth and never told me about it til they had done it, or until I saw a new filling in my mouth!

I was also utterly petrified. A very bad experience, 13 injections drilled jaw, cut gum 11 stitches. There is a thread on here about it somewhere. I got told I needed some work in 2005 and it took me 10 months to get the balls to go.

I had three different appointments with dentists, got to the door and then ran away.

I then spent over a grand on a hypnotist to try and cure my fear which did absolutely dick all.

In the end I went to a specialist dentist for nervous patients. I knew it was for me when I saw plasma's integrated into the ceilings of the rooms. Costs an arm and a leg but I like the bloke (as much as you can like a dentist). I went last month and it was the first time in history that I did not need any work.

Well im booked in for tomorrow at 9am, thankfully they had a cancellation or i would of had to wait at least a month or two, the dental practices here are few and far between

I always take a couple of Valium tablets before I go, calms me down a lot.

If you are that scared go and see your GP and he will give you some.

had my tooth pulled today, its stil bleeding now:eek:
the taste is making me sick, time for a lie down

Bit late now but , were you not given a little pack with extra wadding to bite down on and some instuctions about rinsing with warm salty water ? Thats what I got from my Dentist when I had one pulled 3 years ago ( march 11th actually , I moved house the next day )

John

no i was given the paper telling me to rinse etc, no wadding as it wasnt bleeding when i left, it started about 6 last night,i think a clot came loose, it stopped again at about 2 in the morning, ive never bled so much!!

good bit was that i didnt feel a thing at the dentist, not even the needle
