Just needed some advice prior to upgrading my old Sony STR 940 reciever. Need the receiver equally for movies and audio. Current set-up is made up of B&W 603 S2 speakers, Mission 77DS rears, Tosh sd520 DVD player and a 42 in Toshiba Rear projection TV.
I have shortlisted the Marantz SR7500 (thanks for the great review Kazzman helped make my shortlist!) and the Denon 2805 or 3805 receiver's. Currently the best prices I have found are as follows and I wonder what you all thought was best value for money:

Marantz SR 7500 £560 (new but via a supplier on Tottenham Crt Rd!)
    Denon 2805 £520 (new)
    Denon 3805 £550-600 (2nd hand)
    £780 (new)

Thanks in advance for any advice

The SR7500 at £560 is a very good price!!

What you could do is ring a few forum sponsers like www.avland.co.uk, www.avsales.co.uk and www.petertyson.co.uk and see if they will price match.

I have found ask direct on tottenham court road to be a pretty good store.

The 2805 is also a nice amp, in fact, I've said it before, and I'll say it again, you really can't go wrong with the mid range to high end amps now-a-days, the majority of them are superb, and it kinda comes down to ones taste. Saying that, the Marantz is the best :D j/k :)

    Hi GFS AV,
I got the dealer details from the Marantz European website of authorized dealers. Unfortunately there is no Hifi Surplus website:
    Hi Fi Surplus Store
    260 Tottenham Court Road
    W1T 7RF London West
    Phone : 020 7323 6712
I spoke to Ron who said the SR7500 would need to be ordered in which would take about 4-5 days.
Let me know how you get on!

I gave Peter Tysen a call who said that they could supply an SR 7500 for £560 which sounded good. They did however say that I would need to purchase in-store in either their Carlisle or Newcastle branches, as they do not deliver. Living in North London I don't quite fancy the trek that far up north.
Increasingly looking like its down to the Marantz SR7500 or the Denon 2805 now!

Performance-wise I get the impression they are both of a similar quality.
Ideally would like to demo both without the pressure of buying straight away. I would feel kind of guilty for demoing at a 'respectable dealer' and then buying elsewhere.

Kazman how is the remote on the Marantz?
I read reports that suggested its not quite up to the quality of the Denon. Any other aspects you are not happy with now you have lived with it for a while?

The remote on the Marantz is quirky, but I find it quite useable, it is certainly better than any Denon remote I've seen (apart from the one with the 3805). My uncle has a Denon 1803, and the remote on that is horrid to use, denon remotes are probably the most confusing, not as well thought out as their actual amplifiers in my opinion.

Loving the SR7500 more and more each day, it doesn't stop impressing me :D

If you live in North London, I think AV Land are about an hour away, don't know where AV-Sales are though. Marantz don't allow their resellers to do mail order now, so if you want Marantz, you have to go to the store :( Like KEF do with their speakers and B&W do with their high end speakers.

I find the Marantz remote, to be the best one you can get with a receiver these days.

Even after market remotes rarely get this good - for me, only the URC MX500 and similar ones are equal or better - although the marantz one looks nicier :D
