Denon making *loud* static bursts midway through a movie?

Hi. I've just obtained a Denon AVR 3802, which I'm considering as a replacement for my old Pioneer AV receiver. Considering my old one (VSX-C301) is probably quite a lot lower-range than the Denon this ought to be a no-brainer even if it is quite far from cutting edge these days?

One problem though, it is making a very loud white noise burst for about a second during playback of a movie. This is via DVD or Blu-ray, using a toslink optical cable for DTS 5.1 sound. I haven't had it occur during games on PS3 (same input) or music via analogue line-in stereo.

It only seems to happen once per movie - maybe as the disc changes layer? But it does happen through at least two different DVD playback sources. EDIT - ah. Just watched Matrix on DVD via a 3rd source (original xbox running XBMC) and using an AC-3 Dolby Digital soundtrack it did it again way before the layer change. Some time before that there was a short audio dropout too, but that was just a second or two's mute, annoying enough but not close to the "leap from your chair in fright" burst that really bothers me! Right now this is heading for the bin.

Searching the net I can't find much about this which suggests either the reason I got this free is it's a duff one, OR something I can fix? Very grateful for any advice.

I get a very similar thing with My new Marantz SR8002, I think it may be due to the AUTO setting on the AMP and it losing the signal during layer changes.
It frightens the life out of my Mrs.
