Denon DVD3800 - beyond economic repair

I purchased the DVD3800 in Oct 2002 costing £950. After about 3 years an intermittant fault started - it wouldn't load DVD's, but CD playback was unaffected. This has got progressively worse, to the point where I recently had my dealer investigate. This is when my problems started. Denon wouldn't even look at it without charging me a fixed fee. My dealer located an indepentant repair specialist who advised that it required a new laser assembly costing £200 approx. Clearly with advances in technology and price falls this is not economic.

I feel that for such a high end unit this is unacceptable to be left with a broken player after 4 years. The dealer didn't seem surprised at the outset but is now contending that I have just suffered bad luck and this is unheard of. I have written and e-mailed Denon UK but have received no response.

I must say this has shaken my faith in high end AV to the core and I won't be spending my hard earned on more high end kit until I get to the bottom of this.

I am particularly shocked by Denon's lack of response - this from a manufacturer that I previously held in high esteem.

Other readers views would be appreciated, and if any one from Denon UK is reading this - perhaps they may wish to leave a contact for me?

Thanks

p.s. I am currently using an £80 Toshiba which to be honest I can't really tell the difference on my Pioneer PDP436XDE!
