I can't seem to get a straight answer from anyone re. region free mods for the DVD-2800. I believe it requires a firmware upgrade CD and not a
    hardware mod.

I haven't so far found anywhere that will modify a DVD-2800, yet retailers say they will be getting a disk 'from Denon' that will allow them to do this?

Other countries (from what I've read on AVS forum) seem to have available a full mod which then enables a player to do PAL progressive. Is there anywhere where you can get this mod as the player is currently £607.96 without mod from;www.unbeatable.co.uk ,
£750 with mod from my friendly neighbourhood hi-fi dealer (when he gets the disk). Obviously you see the incentive for looking for a mod from a third party source.

    Any help greatfully received!

We have the disc in question. At present though it appears to disable RGB output so we've not installed it yet. Not sure when the next update is expected.

Thanks Gordon! That clarifies why some dealers are being a bit cagy about it.

Do you sell the Denon DVD-2800? Thought you were just into the projection side of things?

    Hi again.

Stereo Stereo, my daytime employers are a hi-fi turned custom installation specialist. We do Hi-Fi, Home Cinema, distributed audio and video, control systems, lighting etc etc.

We do some Denon. The 2800/3300 and the amps starting at 3801 for cinema use.

The reason I post more often in projector forum is that my job at SS is to do the cinema installations, design and specification. Especially when projectors are involved. Not only that I enjoy it.

Hope this clears things up a bit

    2298 DM = 724 GBP if I've used the right currency convertor, plus postage I think I'd probably wait for something locally (at the £750 quoted). If you're shopping in Germany I hear that these people also do a similar region-free mod;
    http://www.mediacheckpoint.de/

    Thanks for the tip though.

    Mediacheckpoint have the DVD-2800 at;

    868.68 Euros
    +119.82 (16% sales tax)

Including delivery, if I've done my sums correctly it works out at around £630 for a machine with region-free and PAL progressive upgrade. I'm awaiting a reply from them, and hopefully confirmation that this is correct.

I'd still be nervous about any problems I had and having to return the player to Germany....it does make the prices offered in the UK look a bit sorry though.

Had a look at the site, the Denon comes with PS for NTSC only - but at a bargain price actually.

Hope you can get it modified via the CD ... good luck!

I think I've found it. Thanks to Patot on AVS forum who has posted a link to a copy of the Denon region free firmware.
    http://www.edisport.it/edisport/afdigitale/home.nsf

    Go to this Italian site, select 'Downloads' from the black bar, select 'Firmware' and the CD Image is here. Instructions according to Patot are as follows;

"1) Download the file and save on a CD-Rom
    2) Insert CD-Rom in DVD-2800
    3) You should see "WRITING" on your screen
    4) After 40/50 seconds you will see "DONE"
    5) DVD-2800 goes into stand-by
    6)Remove CD-Rom and power-off DVD-2800 (main power)
    7) Press "SKIP -", "PAUSE" and "OPEN/CLOSE" and power-up with main power
    8) DVD-2800 display will show "INITIALIZE".
    9) Power-off and the Power-on the DVD-2800
    10) At this stage the mechine is upgraded

    To check SOFTWARE version

    1) Press "PLay" and "OPEN/CLOSE" while you power on
    2) Press "MENU" on remote
    3) Monitor will show microprocessor version (DVR 1-61)
    4) Press "MENU",
    5) Monitor will show software (ESS2208) version
    6) Power off and then on before you use the machine again
    bewfore you use it

The downloaded file should be named "Bank30.rom". If when dowloaded it ends up being called "Bank30.rom.rom", just rename it.

I have not done this, but the 2 most important HT and HiFi mags in Italy say it works just as planned. Remember, warranty become void."

I've not got a 2800 yet and it would take a lot of courage to try this. It has been mentioned also that this possibly disables RGB output, whilst activating PAL progressive. Maybe one for my dealer to try on my behalf! If anyone tries this PLEASE let us know if it works.

The really interesting thing will be if a hacked version of the latest firware emerges (ie. 2248) Here's hoping...

These swiss guys also do a kit with the CD, and a chip to disable macrovision. Looks interesting (and they seem to have a pretty comprehensive list of mods for other machines too).

    Sods Law dictates that just as I'd settled on the DVD-2800, and had ordered one from www.mediacheckpoint.de for £570 delivered, and region free, PAL progressive with latest firmware (ESS5248) someone has to rain on my parade with the following;
    http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/Forum4/HTML/003617.html

Reports of 'juddering' and possibly not fixable by a firmware upgrade as confirmed apparently by Denon USA? Has anyone any experience of similar problems with a european model? Either way I'll take a chance as it seems a fine machine otherwise.

    Ian Guinan :(

    Ian,

I installed the region free software on our dem unit a couple of days ago. We haven't sat down and watched whole films yet to see if this is a problem or not.

I also haven't checked whether RGB out on scart is disabled. I can confirm it does PAL prog though.

    Thanks for the feedback Gordon.
Where you using the 'official' hacked firmware, or the other one circulating (ESS2208)?

Check out the link on AVS. It describes a fault where the picture shakes during playback....sounds very noticeable if players are affected. Also claims that this is a problems known to Denon, and connected somehow with the background setting to the menus?

    Gordon,
A guy on aus.dvd was also worried that the Denon was not doing native PAL progressive, but was converting to NTSC and then outputting progressive (with less lines)? What do you think of this?

I'll try and work out if it's pal or not. I can say that it's 50Hz. I'd be surprised if it wasn't PAL.

    I read the thread.

Not sure what software etc. We got a disc through the post. No idea where or who from. I presumed it was for the DVD2800, stuck it in and waited to see what happened. Lo and behold a file structure appeared on the screen.

I highlighted what I thought was required, clicked enter and then 30 seconds to a minute later it went in to standby. Left it for a minute, powered it up and immediately removed disc and then put on some discs. It worked. Compared it to the Pioneer 737. Compared it to a FMJ27 then had to run around doing other things. The comparisons were very short and sweet.

Took the plunge and bought a player, currently using mod as described above and very happy that all seems to be working well (despite minor symptoms of the 'flicker' described), whilst I wait for next version of the firmware.

Would recommend www.mediacheckpoint.de (finally cost £580 all in) :) if you can get past the german on the website. If interested email me and I can give you the contact no. for one of their english speaking staff.

I'm quite happy that this should tide me over till I can afford a FMJ or its descendents in a couple of years!

What I've saved can go towards a projector....where does it end...

I know this is bad manners to keep posting replies to my own question but just think that this may be helpful to others.

    Check out http://www.geocities.com/denondvd/

Much improved newer version of hacked firmware. I've tried it (applied in the same way as described above) and can confirm it works very well :)

Now that I've got the latest firmware installed I am very happy with the quality of the machine.

I haven't yet seen progressive output yet and already I'm happy. I'd put it better than my Pioneer 717 which I already thought was good (via RGB).

The player itself is very solid and sturdy, and is very quiet mechanically in operation. Audio playback is very good also - even surprisingly good with MP3s!

I'll let you know a bit more once I've lived with it for a bit

I'm a tad confused regarding this multiregion upgrade.

I purchased my 2800 from Sevenoaks. The player is multiregion. Using the instructions here I have checked to see what version firmware I have.

I am currently running 'ESS 2208'.

This is where I get a little confused. There seems to be an 'ESS 2248' version available aswell.

Please could someone clarify what version I should be using and what the differences are.

    -------

I've only had time to watch one movie on the new player (Rush Hour 2 R1) Picture Quality seems very good and the layer change soooo quick BUT the sound did drop out a few times, I'm a bit worried by this, anyone have any clues what caused it. (I didn't happen on my Pioneer 717)

HI! I purchase from mediacheckpoint on a regular basis so your post caught my attention. Did they supply the Denon unit region free? and if so how did you organise this to be done?

Wow, that seems a long time ago....thats the thing with the written word...it hangs around and comes back to remind you of times past every now and again..

My player was supplied region-free from Mediacheckpoint after paying an extra fee. See also the thread on Denon artifacts for further instalments...I am currently without player waiting for a replacement although many have had good 2800s. Service from Mediacheckpoint has been good though.
