Denon DVD-1740 sound distorted through TV

I purchased a Denon DVD-1740 which I received this morning. It is connected via HDMI, and the sound appears to be very thin and distorted through the TV speakers. I didn't noticed this at first because I was listening to the sound through my NAD stereo amp (the sound is fine through there).

I unplugged the HDMI cable and back in again to make sure it was in properly, but to no avail. I checked the sound settings and everything is fine there. As a last resort, I switched the unit off at the wall and left it for a short while, came back and switched on again and the problem had cleared. A short while after powering on, the problem came back!! Looks like some kind of heat related issue. The fault cannot lie with the TV because my other player does not have this issue.

Might just have a duff one, but thought I'd ask if anyone else has had this problem?

Thanks.
